Mark Walsh Obituary

Attorney Mark Colin Walsh of Scranton passed away Tuesday at Regional Hospital surrounded by his family after a valiant three-year battle with Leukemia. He was 53 years old. Husband of the former Margaret Conaboy, he was the loving father of two daughters, Rosetta Walsh and Maggie Walsh, both of Scranton. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Walsh. He is survived by his mother, Joan Walsh of Scranton; mother- and father-in-law, Judge Richard and Marion Conaboy of Scranton. Also surviving are brothers, Joseph Walsh Jr. and wife, Judy of Michigan; Brian Walsh of Clarks Summit; sister, Lisa Mundt and husband, Dennis of Dunmore; Julie McCloskey and husband, Tom of Kennett Square; and many nieces and nephews.

A truly wonderful husband, father and friend, his dedication to family was well recognized and admired by all. Mark was passionate about spending time with family and fishing at his lakeside cabin. Love and laughter permeated gatherings, despite any challenges he faced. Mark's main goal in life was to make other people feel as special as he truly believed they were.

Having previously been treated for Hodgkin's disease, he was a major supporter of cancer research. When he was diagnosed with Leukemia three years ago, he took on the fight with the same passion and confidence he used in his everyday life.

Born in Scranton on May 4, 1959, he attended Scranton Public Schools and graduated with honors from Scranton Central High School in 1977. He went on to Columbia University in New York City, where he was a Dean's List student as well as varsity letter winner as the center on the football team. Following graduation, he did an internship at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. In 1982, he entered Dickinson School of Law, where he distinguished himself graduating near the top of his class. He served as a law clerk for the Hon. Thomas Gibbons, in the Federal Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

He subsequently went on to a distinguished legal career and was a founding member of the city law firm Blasi and Walsh, where he represented individuals, corporations, school districts and innumerable clients. He performed untold hours of legal work for people who could not afford a lawyer. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to pro bono service he was honored by the the Lackawanna Pro Bono Organization as well as receiving a similar honor from the Pennsylvania Bar Association. A man of rare integrity, generosity and compassion for people, Mark worked tirelessly to better his community. Whether teaching Sunday School, lecturing as a professor at Lackawanna Junior College, or serving as President of the School Board, his career was focused on helping others.

Mark was a member and lector at Divine Mercy Parish, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America and the Minooka Lions Club. He earned a 2nd degree black belt in Karate. Mark served as the Honorary Grand Marshal of the 2012 St. Patrick's Day Parade.

An inspiration to all, Mark's legacy will live on in the many lives improved and the hearts he touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Divine Mercy Parish, at Church of St. Joseph, 312 Davis St., to be celebrated by the Rev. Francis Pauselli, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. Anyone attending the funeral is asked to proceed directly to the Church Saturday morning.

Family and friends may call Friday from 2-8 p.m. in the Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home, 2908 Birney Ave., Scranton, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lackawanna County Bar Association in appreciation of all their help to Mark and his family.

Dear Peggy(my schoolmate and childhood friend) and the Walsh Family,
My deepest sympathy to all of you. I live almost directly across from the Eagen/Hughes funeral home and have been watching the outpouring of genuine love for your Mark most of the day. The line goes down the block and is the biggest I've seen in my 12 years here. I did not have the pleasure of knowing him, but to me this says it all as to the caliber of man he was. I hope it helps to ease your pain at this difficult time. May the love of God and your beautiful memories be your strength to carry on.

As a little kid, I also remember the scooter ride in the alley up behind the Walsh home, the words of encouragement from the Walsh and Salmon kids as if it was a rite of passage.
I have many thoughts of love and respect to offer the Walsh family. As words of comfort can bring us to tears we are not crying for Mark but for the great hole in our lives that has been left by his wake.

Our deepest heart felt condolences to Mr Walsh's family and friends. What a special man Mark was. Along with the great loss his passing must be to his loved ones, this will also be such a loss to the people of the county and state. He was a man who treated all with dignity and respect. Words escape me on how to express the value of the blessing of meeting one of the area's few righteous litigators and positive male role models. If it is the Father's will, I pray Mark, in the name of God's son Jesus, that you can keep fighting from Heaven, for peace and good will to be sent to all of God's children still waiting for salvation from what ever is ailing the people of the valley. Amen.
With all due respect and much gratitude, God speed in your journey home. Lackawanna County's loss is Heaven's gain and it is with much pain in my heart, that I say Good Bye to you, Attorney Walsh. It was an honor to meet you.
{{{ Megan }}} ,hang in there. No one can ever take the place of Uncle Mark, who was a remarkable human being. I still remember you from Nativity and what a good group of nice girls you all were. If you want to, feel free to look me up anytime.

I had the pleasure of working for Mark for 20 years and I can't think of anyone with more integrity. He always put 100% effort into everything he did and he treated everyone equally. Even after he became ill, he kept his positive attitude and worried about everyone else. He truly loved Peggy, Rosetta and Maggie above all else. He often referred to Peggy as "my beautiful wife" and was so proud of Rosetta and Maggie. Mark taught me so much, not just about the legal profession, but about life and how you should treat people. To all of Mark's family, I am so sorry and you will all be in my prayers. I know he will still be taking care of all of you from above.

Mrs. Walsh, Joe, Lisa, Brian and Julie,
I am so sorry to hear of Mark's illness and passing. He was as kind as they come and always treated me like a little sister. I'll never forget how much I enjoyed the rides on your dad's scooter in the alley and how I never would have taken that first ride if he didn't help me overcome my fear... Although our paths have not crossed in so many years and the neighbor kids have all gone their separate ways, I will always fondly look back at all the fun times with your family and I will never forget Mark nor his kindness!
