John Joseph Besten Sr. of Syracuse, N.Y., passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday.

Born in Carbondale, Pa., he had resided in the Syracuse area for more than 60 years. In 1986, John retired from Chrysler Corp. after 32 years of employment. Mr. Besten enjoyed family, gardening and ice fishing. A veteran of WWII, he served proudly in the United States Army.

John was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary (Batok) Besten; his wife, Carmella Vincitore Besten, in 1991; brother, Anthony Besten; and sister, Alice Slabinski.

Survivors include his children, John J. (Susan O'Connor) Besten Jr. of East Syracuse, N.Y.; and Joanne (Richard) Walters of Syracuse; grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Tasso of Syracuse; Richard (Daphne) Besten of Newburgh, N.Y.; and Karen (Donald) Schermerhorn of Kirkville, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Vera Lynn Schermerhorn and Chauncey John Besten; sister, Marion Nobilski of Carbondale; fiancée and caregiver, Kathryn Mancuso of Archbald, Pa.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday 9:15 a.m. at Farone & Son Funeral Home and 10 at St. James Church, 4845 S. Salina Street, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Entombment will follow in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 1500 Park St., Syracuse.
