Joseph P. Hudacs, 92, a resident of Willowbrook Assisted Living, South Abington Twp., formerly of Scranton, died Friday at Commonwealth Hospice, Regional Hospital of Scranton.
Born in Scranton, son of the late John and Mary Novak Hudacs, Joe was a veteran of World War II, leaving school before graduation to join the Army when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was a sergeant with the Sixth Armored Division, was in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge with General Patton's Third Army and worked to free the dying people in the concentration camps in Czechoslovakia.
The Hudacs family were founding members of Holy Family Church in Scranton, where Joe was a member until its closing. He then became a member of St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton.
Joe was previously employed by Tobyhanna Army Depot and Pennsylvania Gas and Water Co.
Admired by his nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, Joe was a kind, generous, faith-filled man who lived a simple life. He was a great comfort to his siblings, especially Regina, for whom he was a caregiver. He had a great love of the outdoors, spending many days at Lake Lorain fishing and swimming. He enjoyed being a ham radio operator.
Joe was very fond of animals and looked forward to his Sunday visits by his canine buddy, Oliver.
He is survived by nephews, Ron Grambo, Dennis Hudacs and Ralph Grambo, Joe's caregivers; John Hudacs and Martin Hudacs; nieces, Sheila Mateleska, Rosemary Schmidt, Anne Marie Brown, Kim Fantazier and Kathleen Welsh; along with many great-nephews and great-nieces and their children.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, John and Robert Hudacs; sisters, Regina Hudacs and Ludmilla Grambo; and a niece, Mary Elizabeth McPhee.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John Lapera at the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. A viewing will precede the Mass starting at 9:30 in the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509. Arrangements are by the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc.
