William Malos Obituary

William J. Malos of Dunmore, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep Sunday at home. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend to many, and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Born on Nov. 24, 1961, Billy, as he was called by everyone, attended Dunmore schools and graduated from Dunmore High School in 1979. He ran track for Dunmore, specializing in long distance running. He earned a degree in engineering from Penn State University in 1983. He was a registered professional engineer at the Pennsylvania American Water Co. for over 30 years, where he oversaw the design and construction of water resource facilities.

Billy loved life and participated in many activities. He ran over 100 marathons, including the Boston Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. He was the family historian and traveled to the Malos family ancestral home in Ukraine annually for the past 20 years with his good friend, Father Gabe Tetorak. He was very involved as a member of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunmore, which he belonged to his whole life.

Billy was an especially devoted son and cared many years for his father, William, who passed away in 2009. He lived with and cared for his mother, Dorothy, and helped her to maintain the family home.

He will also be missed greatly by his brother, Charles, of Wall, N.J., and wife, Linda; Richard, of Woodstown, N.J., and wife, Karen; David, of Sayre, Pa., and wife, Elizabeth; and his sister, Mary Blattberg, of New York City, and husband, David. He is also survived by his aunts, Ann Weller, Anka Regni, Elsie and uncle, Paul Rusincovitch; and many cousins.

He was an unbelievable uncle to his nieces and nephews, Sara Ruane and William Blattberg, Kate and Nicholas Malos, Julia, Rebecca and Anna Malos and Daniel, Christopher, Maryann, Timothy and Catherine Malos. He never missed a birthday party, christenings, dance recitals, sporting events or graduations, and was always up for playing wiffle ball and board games with them.

He loved animals, especially his dog, Monty, and his cats, Ollie, Blackie and Twoface. He loved to feed the birds and squirrels in his yard. He was extremely generous to all, and took care of those around him and would help anyone who needed it.

Billy had many and varied hobbies. He was a lifelong collector of baseball cards and enjoyed restoring vintage toys. He had a full, interesting and vibrant life and leaves a legacy of kindness, acceptance and generosity to those who were fortunate enough to know him.

The funeral will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the Chipak Funeral Home, 623 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with a Divine Liturgy at 10 in St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Church, 511 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, to be celebrated by the Rev. Robert W. Lozinski, C.S.C. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery, Dunmore.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Parastas service at 6:30.

Send donations in his honor to St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Dunmore, Pa., or the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter of South Abington Twp., Pa.

To Dorothy
Although I do not know you I feel for you. I am so sorry, I can imagine what you are going through, going downstairs to find my son back in March this year and also finding his body lifeless. But I can assure you that the light of God will not stop shining in the intense darkness. I will pray for you.

Bill Malos was a good friend to me and to all who knew him. He had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh, loved a good party, loved spending time with his brothers, nieces and nephews who endeared him as their own Uncle Buck. He loved traveling to Ukraine, seeing his extended family and their children, sharing stories, meals and much more. He was an excellent athlete and shared his love of running with others who were learning to run and race, myself included. Those that got to know him really well, know that his faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a respected member of his faith community and never turned down an offer to pitch in. Above all, he lived his faith by taking care of his father and mother whom he adored. There will never, ever be another like him. While family, friends and our community will miss him dearly, I know he is already in heaven, joined with his earthly father and heavenly father resting in peace. There will always be a place in my heart for you, Billy Malos.

Billy you were always so kind to us, and our kids loved when Uncle Billy came for a visit to the Malos Madhouse bc you were so much fun! Your devotion to faith and family was unmatched and you certainly have earned your Heavenly reward. You were a great role model for all of us. I'm sad that Joe and I will never be able to celebrate Polkapalooza with you as we had planned, but someday we'll meet again my friend, and share a polka. Rest in Peace.

My Uncle Billy was the best uncle someone could have and like a second father to me. The most generous and loving person you could always count on. I can't believe this has happened and I and the Malos family appreciate all the thoughts friends are sending. Thank you so much. I have posted some photos of Billy and please do the same if you have any to share. All the support in this time of need is so appreciated.

Bill was a team mate on our Dunmore Track and Cross Country Teams. Bill, Gene Sagan, Mike Degnan, and me won the District 2 mile relay in 1979. A great friend who I have not seen since graduation but one I will never forget. A good man who was taken from us too soon. To the Malos family I am so sorry for your loss. Good bye dear friend.

Malos family,
Only knew Bill on the 'road around Lake Scr and a few Steamtown Marathons. But, being a fellow Dunmorean I want to express my deepest regrets to hear of Bill's passing. I know I never passed him, but always got a nod from him as he strode by me, being an old Dunmore guy
Deepest regrets.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Bills passing. His obituary accurately depicted Bills generous spirit, deep faith, and love of family. For me, I will most remember his sense of humor and laughter. While working with him at PAWC, we always knew when he was around and could count on him lifting spirits and a witty exchange.
Rest in Peace Bill! "You have fought the good fight, You have finished the race, and have kept the faith." Enjoy your heavenly reward!

Bill was the nicest guy and a wonderful friend to my husband, Dan. They were friends in and out of work for many years. Billy never hesitated to help Danny whenever needed and they loved going out talking baseball, having a few years and good laughs. I love Bill's love for animals, we had that in common and talked about it everytime we saw each other. He always asked how our pets were. He was always interested in talking to me about our mutual Ukranian heritage. He was an all around good guy and will be missed very much. Seems the good ones always go too young, but I'm glad he had a happy life. We will never forget him. Tamara Rickard

I am shocked and heartbroken to read this. I graduated from high school with Billy and then later worked with him at PG&W. I used to give him a ride to Wilkes-Barre in the morning and he would run home to Dunmore. My mom spoke Ukrainian so Billy connected with her and used to come for dinner at my parents' home. I looked forward to his annual Ukrainian Christmas and Easter greetings and we messaged back and forth just this past Easter. You would be hard-pressed to meet anyone as nice and kind as Billy . I offer my most sincere condolences to his family. I know that you were all the lights of his life. You will all be in my prayers and he will never be forgotten.
