John Stopka Obituary

John Stopka, 97, of Montrose, died Monday at Gracious Living Estates Personal Care Home, Montrose.

Born Dec. 26, 1919, in Kovarce, Slovakia, son of the late Jan and Julia Krall Stopka, he was employed Nationwide Insurance Co.

He was a member of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church and the Stamp Club of Scranton. He also enjoyed camping, coin collecting and piloting his plane with his wife. Previously, he was a part of Knights of Columbus, the Civil Conservation Corps and served as an altar boy in his local church.

Surviving are his wife, Stephanie Stopka; and a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and John G. Nuzzo, Brick, N.J.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph M. Stopka.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Montrose.

Visitation, Thursday, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., at Bartron-Myer Funeral Home Inc., Montrose. For more information or directions, please go to bartronmyerfuneralhome.com.

I only met John once when he taught an Adult Night School class in Montrose about stamp collecting. I found John to be a very interesting man with great stories and I was always hoping to meet up with him again, being a philatelist myself. May he rest in peace. May the Good Lord keep his family in His loving care.
