So sorry to hear about Prof. Wootton's passing. Roger Wootton was a kind and affable man. I was lucky enough to have him as an assessor of my major project during my undergraduate degree. Always had a door open for students and was willing to listen. Full of stories and witty. A class act.

I was privileged to know Roger as a student at City University when he studied Aeronautical Engineering. Prof Tokaty was head, and Herbert Pearcey had suggested Roger's student project. Roger worked brilliantly and diligently. As the teacher who had the responsibility of being in charge of Roger's project work I was able to guide with a very light touch, and I could see Roger's skills exceeded mine in many regards. In transonic aerodynamics Roger carefully assembled all the knowledge he could on the pressure distributions around spherically blunted cones and was able to flesh out our own work from the City University transonic wind tunnel at College Building St John Street London.

Professor Roger Wootton was my project guide for the AMM MSc program and he motivated and constantly guided me to complete my project despite me terribly unsure on how and what to do . Terribly saddened to know he has passed on . May his soul rest in peace. He will continue to be source of inspiration

Approachable, assisting, supportive, an inspiration to all of us, combining a great sense of humour, a true mentor. He left behind a real contribution to aviation and the air transport industry in specific. As mentioned in the notice "a wonderfully eccentric Englishman", it was a privilege to be his student. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends. RIP Professor Wooton

I wished every student would be as fortunate as I was to enrol on a university program that so rightly meets the needs of students and the industry. Roger was the soul of this program. He will be remembered by the many who he inspired for the remainder of their careers, we shall perpetuate his vision. With my sincere sympathy to his wife and family. Jean-Paul Pirson, MSc ATM 2003.

I am reminded of the time in 1995 when Roger, Dave Thorley and the Vice Chancellor of City University, Raoul Franklin, recruited me back to the UK from a prolonged stay in North America, to be Head of Centre for Aeronautics. It was a very hot period in London and we enjoyed ourselves in the pavement cafes in the vicinity of the University with Roger displaying his fine degree of quirkiness!
Roger's love of life, his fine eccentricities in many of the day-to-day events, were endearing and sometimes a little frustrating! What a wonderfully supportive colleague! He is in my memory forever! God bless you, Uncle Roger!

He instilled in all of us pride with which he served the University and his profession. He will forever be remembered in the highest esteem by students, peers, industry professionals and City University of London colleagues. When thinking about my time at the City University London i first think of Mr. Wootton. He was a real leader of the programme and helped me a lot during the project for the MSc. His presentation of the guidlines for the project in class was memorable and funny to hear. Although he said that you only have to listen to his presentation one time because there is only "one set of jokes", i listened to it two times and really enjoyed his thoughts. My condolences to the family!

With condolences to Rogers family and past and present colleagues. It was a pleasure to study under Roger and his staff (Air Transport MSc 2006 -2008 City University London). Roger was a caring professor who wanted to enhance his students lives and unleash their potential. He was engaging, always great company and interested in each of everyone of his students. Their thoughts, backgrounds and aspirations. The Air Transport industry owes a debt of gratitude to Roger as he battled hard with the education authorities to accept practical air transport experience in lieu of academic experience on the basis that many started their working lives at a young age and had not had the opportunity to gain a first degree. Good on you Roger ! You will be missed.

Prof. Wootton was one of a kind. Astonishingly intelligent and able to pull any argument apart within moments, but able to do it with enormous grace and charm.

When I was unlucky enough to be diagnosed with Lymphoma half way through my M.Sc, Roger was an absolute rock and guided me through the course once I got back to some semblance of health.

On a professional basis, I owe Roger an enormous amount. After being ill I could no longer hold a medical to fly professionally and finishing the M.Sc was the key to unlocking the career I now have. I can honestly say I could not have done it without his support.

The world is a worse place without his intellect, compassion and humour.

R.I. P Roger. You'll be missed by a lot of people and that is a sign of a life well lived.
