Balk Jr., Melvin L.  
Melvin L. Balk, Jr. Harbor Beach Melvin L. Balk, Jr., 64, died January 26, 2015 at McLaren Hospital in Port Huron after a long battle with illness. The oldest of 12 children, Melvin was born on May 8, 1950, to Melvin and Olive Marie Balk. He is survived by his father, Melvin, Sr., his three children, Emily, Thomas, and Melanie, and his ten siblings. He was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, loving nothing more than to entertain them with his stories and guitar singalongs. Melvin was a Vietnam veteran, a devoted man of faith, avid outdoorsman, comedian and musician. He was a movie and television enthusiast, and especially enjoyed all things Sci-Fi and supernatural. Melvin will be remembered as a compassionate friend to many, as well as a loving son, brother, father, and uncle. Melvin was preceded in death by his brother, Richard, and his mother, Olive Marie. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 1pm at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church of Harbor Beach, with Fr. William Spencer presiding. Burial will be held at a later time in the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. Visitation for Melvin will be Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 3-8pm at the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach. Visitation on Friday will be at the church beginning at 12 pm until time of services at 1 pm.

Bateman, Gerald  
Gerald E. Bateman Port Huron Gerald E. Bateman, age 88 of Port Huron died January 26, 2015 in Blue Water Hospice Home after a short illness.  He was born June 24, 1926 in Applegate to George and Mary Bateman.  He married Nancy A. Bateman on January 30, 1954 in the First Congregational Church in Port Huron.  She preceded him in death on June 24, 2002.  Gerry worked at Michigan Bell for many years.  He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the American Legion Post 8.  He was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Port Huron.  Gerry is survived by 2 children, Niki A. (Gregory A.) Gjere and Timothy (Linda) Bateman, and 2 grandchildren, Jimmy A. and Megan A. Gjere.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Shipley and a brother, Richard Bateman.  A funeral service will take place at 2 PM Saturday at the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Max Amstutz officiating.  Visitation will also be on Saturday beginning at 12 noon until the service begins.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Blue Water Hospice Home.  www.smithfamilyfuneralhome.com .

Dailey, Barbara  
Barbara H. Dailey Fort Gratiot Barbara H. Dailey, age 76, died January 26, 2015 in McLaren Port Huron after a short illness.  She was born November 15, 1938 in Detroit and lived in the Blue Water area since 1973.  She married Donald Dailey on June 17, 1961 in Royal Oak.  Barbara taught 1st through 8th grade in the Yale Public Schools for many years.  Over a twenty year period she cared for 30 exchange students through Youth for Understanding.  Barb also enjoyed spinning and knitting, making handmade teddy bears, and her dogs. She is survived by her husband, Donald Dailey, 2 children, Larry Dailey and Maureen (Paul) Miller, 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and her poodle, Laci.  She was preceded in death by 3 brothers. A memorial service will take place at 11 AM Friday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, with The Rev. Max Amstutz officiating.  Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 PM and on Friday beginning at 10 AM in the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Youth for Understanding.  www.smithfamilyfuneralhome.com .

Frantz, Emma  
Emma L. Frantz Port Huron Emma L. Frantz, age 88, passed away on January 21, 2015. She was born February 24, 1926 in Port Huron to the late Bernard and Beatrice Heering. She married Martin Frantz Sr. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed baking, crocheting and the outdoors. She is survived by her children Martin (Bonnie) Frantz Jr., Terry (Kathy) Frantz, Carol (Dennis) Putze, Don (Kim) Frantz, Deborah Frantz and Linda (Larry) Nuss; grandchildren Dawn (David) Fortier, Christina Frantz, Tim Frantz, George (Julie) Frantz, Samantha (Chris) Stevenson, Joseph Frantz, Mary (Aaron) Westrick, Jeremy Frantz, Patricia (Justen) Diaz, Jennifer Carpo (Kyle Wolfe); and great grandchildren Matthew, Joshua, Hailie and Grant Shafer, Andre Frantz, Aubree Fair, DeLaney and Brock Frantz, Julie and Cadence Stevenson, Emma and Eva Frantz, Clayton Diaz, and Olivia Wolfe. She was preceded in death by her husband Martin Frantz, son-in-law Larry Nuss and her grandson John Frantz. Her son Martin Frantz Jr. followed her passing the following day, January 22, 2015. Private services will take place.

Coty John Durrell Grifka Warren Coty John Durrell Grifka, age 30, passed away January 25, 2015. He was born on April 27, 1984 to John and Tamikia Halcomb in Warren. He is survived by his daughter; Vanessa Grifka and son; Rylie Grifka, mother; Tamikia Halcomb, father; John Halcomb, grandparents; John and Donna Cosand and Tina Marchand, great-grandmother; Dollie Johnson, and step-father; Gerald Chuhran. Sandra Kay "Sandy" Marks Hutchinson Port Huron Township Sandra Kay "Sandy" Marks Hutchinson, 54, of Port Huron Township died Saturday, January 24, 2015. She was born September 10, 1960 in Port Huron to the late Gerald and Jeanette Marks. She married Alan Hutchinson on December 27, 2002 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2012. Sandra was employed with Port Huron Molding for many years. She enjoyed bowling, doing puzzles, knitting and loved watching NASCAR.  She is survived by her brother, Ronald (Patty) Marks; nephews, Nick (Stephanie) Ward and Matthew Ward; niece, Erin Allen (Gordon); sister-in-law, Lou Ann Marks; brother-in-law, Dana Pool; great nephew, Seth; great nieces, Abigail, Gracie and Alexis; four step brothers; one step sister; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Norma Pool; and stepfather, Merlyn Henry. Memorial services will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, January 29, 2015 in Marysville Funeral Home with visiting from 5:00 pm until the time of service. Rev. Daniel S. Bakay will officiate.
