Hackett, John
John Mertens Hackett, Sr. Harsens Island John Mertens Hackett, Sr., 81, of Harsens Island, Michigan, and long-time winter visitor to The Woodlands, Texas, passed from this life Friday, May 13, 2016 after a long illness. He was born March 1, 1935, in Pontiac, Michigan to Henrietta and Daniel Hackett.  He attended St. Fred's Catholic School, then went to Notre Dame for undergraduate and graduate degrees. Being a graduate assistant at ND helped him discover his love of teaching.  He taught Biology at Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Michigan, for 35 years.  He retired in 1994.  He was proud of and humbly recognized the importance of the career of teaching.  He was president of the Birmingham Education Association for the last 18 years of his career, while continuing to enjoy being in the classroom.  He helped usher in many improvements for those he represented. He was blessed with four wonderful children, who gave him great joy, fulfillment and love, and ten beautiful grandchildren, who provided pleasure, fascination, amusement, and a promising view of the future. He was a "St Clair river rat", and loved watching the freighters go by in front of the four-generation Hackett cottage on Walpole Island, and then from his home on Harsens Island.  He was an avid student of the ships' looks, characteristics, and sounds, and was rarely wrong in identifying them while still out of sight.  "BIG BOAT COMING" was often heard by his grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his loving parents, and brothers Dan and Mike.  He leaves behind his loving wife Carol; children John M. Hackett, Jr., wife Christy, and granddaughters Grace and Abbie; Jane H. Cole, husband Brent, and son Tyler; Ann Hackett, husband Kip and children William and Charlotte; and Mary H. Stonecipher, husband Joe, and children Leah, Addie and Daniel.  He will be missed by his sister-in-law Dorothy Hackett, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and other family members and friends.  They all added joy to his life. A funeral service will be held at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, in The Woodlands, TX on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 11:00 AM.  A celebration-of-life memorial service will be held in Michigan during the summer.   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Notre Dame Memorial Fund; Michigan Education Association Scholarship Fund; the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; Harsens Island Reader's Cove Library or Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, Michigan. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His strength and courage were inspirational to many.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
