Doris M. Thomas Lexington Doris Marie Thomas, Lexington, Michigan, age 85 died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014. Daughter of Thomas E. and Susan B. (neé Pologun) Helsel (Kleman), wife of the late Sheldon Clermont Thomas. She was born October 14, 1929 in Portage, Pennsylvania. She married Sheldon (Shorty) Thomas on March 6, 1948. He passed away Sept. 9, 2007. The family moved to Detroit in 1952. In Detroit, Doris worked in housekeeping at St. John Hospital.  After the family moved to  Lexington, Michigan in 1979, she  was active at Lexington UMC as choir member, Deacon, Sunday school teacher, nursery attendant, custodian, and cook. She was a member of the Lexington Players.  She was a master gardener, an advocate for the ethical treatment of animals, and the quintessential housewife. She was a member of the Eastern Star and was active as a volunteer for Lexington civic affairs. Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sheldon, and sisters Stella Skelly and Grace Warner. She is survived by daughters Sherry (Gary) Schultz, and Sandy McLean, son Sheldon Mark Thomas (John Matthias), three grandsons, and three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Lexington United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon to follow at the church. Internment of Doris and her husband Sheldon (veteran, WWII) will be conducted privately at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. Memorials in memory of Doris may be made to: Vascular Disease Foundation; Parkinson's Disease Foundation; Winn Feline Foundation; Michigan Cat Rescue; or Regency on the Lake.
