Sheldon, Virginia
Virginia S. "Jinny" Sheldon Port Huron The world changed when Virginia S. "Jinny" Sheldon, 85 of Port Huron, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 17, 2015, surrounded by her family.  She was born to Shirley and Abigail Colgan on her father's birthday, February 12, 1929 in Port Huron where she was a life-long resident. Jinny had a wonderful and creative childhood, attended the Port Huron schools, and graduated from Port Huron High School in 1946.  Following her graduation from Port Huron Junior College, she earned her bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Michigan State University and took graduate classes at Wayne State University. On April 1, 1955 Jinny married William R. Sheldon in Grace Episcopal Church and set off on an amazing life.  She taught pre-kindergarten thru 2nd grade, first at Campau Elementary School and then at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, where she was known to her numerous students simply as "Miss Jinny."  She spent more than 20 years as the directing teacher at Mayflower Nursery School until retiring in the early 1990s. While dedicating her life to education she always maintained a very close relationship with her parents and relatives. Along with teaching, Jinny also exhibited passions for travel, her numerous pets and especially young children. She also loved her volunteer work in the community which was primarily with the Salvation Army and Port Huron Hospital.  She was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Blue Water Garden Club. When given the opportunity to travel, Jinny was always on board. She and her family traversed the US numerous times in a Winnebago visiting 45 states by RV. Internationally she loved adventure and traveled to Jamaica, Mexico, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Bahamas, and even took a barge trip down the Danube. She was thrilled to be in attendance when her beloved MSU Spartans won the Rose Bowl in 1987. Her travel also included countless crazy vacations with the "Shanty Group" and other close friends. When not traveling, she always found a spot in the sun despite the season.  Whether on the beach, her back deck or on the boat, she always took in the sun. At home she was constantly surrounded by her pets. Never one to turn away a stray, she always had four-legged companions at her side. She also never tired of having random people approach her and begin their conversation with "You're Miss Jinny! You were my kindergarten teacher in 19..."  She could always recall specific details of her time with each and every one of her former students. Her full and incredible life was made even richer by her loyal friends and neighbors who she adored. Their always being there for her allowed her to live out her life free of petty cares and worries. Jinny is survived by her two children, Laura (Emory Floyd III) Sheldon and Dave (Jill Jamison) Sheldon, both of Fort Gratiot; and her two granddaughters, Christine (John) Bright of Fort Gratiot and Emily Munsie of Chicago, IL.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, who died August 31, 1987.  She was also predeceased by her close companion for many years, Robert Falk. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.  A service in Jinny's memory will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Grace Episcopal Church preceded by one hour of visitation.  The Rev. Lydia Speller will officiate.  Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery at a later time. Contributions may be made in Jinny's memory to the Blue Water Area Humane Society, The Salvation Army, Blue Water Hospice, or the charity of the donor's choice.  To send condolences, please visit smithfamilyfuneralhome.com Her family is eternally grateful and privileged to have had her for 85 years and will always remember her for her good times, love of life, fun and great adventures. Though Jinny is gone, she lives on in the lives of the thousands of people that she has touched through her amazing career as a teacher and by simply being a friend.
