Donald L. Porter, 84, passed away unexpectedly in his residence of natural causes on Monday, June 02, 2014.  He was born December 18, 1929 in Sarnia, Ontario and moved to Port Huron in the early 1940s.  He graduated from Port Huron High School in 1947 and attended Port Huron Jr. College.

On June 3, 1950, Don married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jean Beach.  He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict.

Don worked as a computer programmer at Port Huron Paper Co. and then went to work for Prestolite Wire & Cable, retiring as a data processing supervisor in the mid 1980s.  He was a member and kitchen volunteer at Our Saviour Lutheran Church.  He loved all sports, especially hockey and golf.

Don is survived by his three sons, Donald L. "Chip" (Jackie) Porter Jr. of Port Huron, Thomas W. (Kathleen) Porter of Woodhaven, MI, and David S. (Sandy) Porter of Orchard Lake, MI; five grandchildren, Deila, Scot, Roarke, Rachel, & Sean Porter; and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, who died April 14, 1996.  He was also predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Porter and his dear companion, Joan Potter.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St.  The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Our Saviour Lutheran Church preceded by one hour of visitation.  Pastor Donald Doerzbacher will officiate.  Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery at a later time.
