Earl D. "Butch" Shoulders Jr.

Earl D. "Butch" Shoulders Jr., 73 of Port Huron, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.  He was born to Earl and Ila Shoulders on July 15, 1940 in Port Huron, attended the Port Huron schools graduating from Port Huron High School in 1958, and attended Port Huron Jr. College for two years.

Earl accepted Christ at an early age and was a life-long and faithful member of Faith Christian Community Church.  He served as church organist for 40 years, was the church custodian, and was a member of the Steward Board.

Earl worked for the St. Clair County court system for over 30 years, retiring in August of 2003.  He was involved in many local organizations including president of the Blue Water Citizens Against Crime, member of the Southside Coalition, past chair and vice president of the Port Huron Housing Commission, Life Member of the NAACP, treasurer of the Port Huron and Detroit Railroad Historical Society, past vice president of the St. Clair County Retirees Association, and member of the Blue Water Festival Committee.  He also served as organist for St. Paul A.M.E. Church was a former organist at Historic Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and the South Park Men's Community Choir.

Earl enjoyed reading, gardening, raising boxer dogs, and hanging around with his train friends.  Over the years he mentored many young people in the community.

Earl leaves to cherish his memories, his mother, Ila E. Shoulders of Port Huron; his twin sisters, Cecile Shoulders of Port Huron and Celeste Shoulders of Lansing, MI; his brother, Michael (Carolyn) Shoulders and his two nieces, Shauna and Tiara, all of Baltimore, MD; his uncle, Charles (Lola) Hazely of Detroit, MI; his caregiver, Edwin Foster of Port Huron; his life-long friend, Armstead Diggs; and many foster children.  He will also be missed by his many, many cousins, other relatives, and friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, Earl D. Shoulders Sr. and his grandparents, Wilbert and Susie Hazely, and Ora and Joseph Jenkins.

Visitation will be on Sunday, March 16, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.  His Home Going service will be at 12:00 noon on Monday in Faith Christian Community Church, 1640 Cleveland Avenue, Port Huron preceded by one hour of visitation at the church.  Pastor Emeritus Link Howard will officiate.  Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
