Kenneth Albert Schwark

Kenneth Albert Schwark Rochester Kenneth Albert Schwark, age 89, passed away at home on Sunday, March 23, 2014 surrounded by the love of his family. He was born October 8, 1924 in Mount Clemens, to the late Albert and Meta (nee Stark) Schwark. On May 6, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Clemens, he was united in marriage to the former Margaret Zagel. In a few weeks they would have celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. A lifelong Lutheran, Kenneth was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Clemens until 1974 when he moved to Rochester and joined Saint John Lutheran Church. He was also a 64 year member of the Mount Clemens Kiwanis Club, where he served as president in 1959. After briefly serving in the Army Air Corp, he founded Schwark's Army Surplus Store in Mount Clemens that later became Schwark's Trading Post. In 1958 he co-founded Dopp and Schwark Furniture in Mt. Clemens and left in 1962 to open Schwark Furniture in Utica. He grew Schwark furniture from a small store in downtown Utica, to a multi-store operation with additional stores in Saint Clair, Mt. Clemens and Shelby Township over a period of 40 years. In 1972 he built the Shelby Square Shopping Center in Shelby Township, which he owned until his death. In 1989, he developed Sycamore Hills Gold Club of Macomb Township where he served as Chairman until his death. Kenneth also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the State Bank of Fraser, the Bank of Commence, and Security BankCorp. In addition to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he enjoyed golfing, boating, traveling, jigsaw puzzles and antique cars. He is survived by his wife Margaret, three sons, James (Candice), Thomas (Rhonda), Michael (Cathy), nine grandchildren, Heather (David) Cross, Scott (Katie) Schwark, Michelle (Michael) Zawadzki, Steven Schwark, Melissa (Brandon) Asher, Matthew Schwark, Erica (Tim) Smigill, Amy Sumpter, Stacy Sumpter, and three great grandchildren, Emmalee Cross, Madelyn Smigill and Maximus Zawadzki. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 11:00 am (instate at 10:00 am) at Trinity Lutheran Church, 38900 Harper, Clinton Twp., with the Rev. E. Paul Burow officiating. Burial will be in Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Twp. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm in the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main, Mt. Clemens.
