Martin F. Schmidt Clinton Twp. Martin F. Schmidt, 89, formerly of Marine City, entered Eternal Life on Monday, February 11, 2013. He was born in Detroit on January 29, 1924, a son to the late Joseph A. and Anna (VanLeyen) Schmidt. He married Bernadette DeRosier on May 22, 1954 in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan and she preceded him in death on October 30, 1998. Martin was a graduate of Michigan State University
where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He was employed as a social worker and retired as the supervisor of services in the Department of Social Services with the State of Michigan. He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Navy
and the Marine Corps. Martin is a veteran of both WW II and the Korean War
. He completed over 40 years of service in the U.S. Navy (including the reserves) and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was very devoted to his Catholic faith and was an active member of Holy Cross Church, Marine City. Martin was certified as a Pastoral Minister, he taught religious education, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was invested and later professed in the Franciscan Secular Order (the successor to the Third Order of St. Francis). He did volunteer work at Mercy Hospital, Port Huron, and conducted monthly prayer services and communion service at the local nursing home as well as serving in the prison ministry at Macomb County correctional facilities. Martin was also a member of the Marine City Knights of Columbus, Council 856, a 4th Degree Knight and member of K of C Richmond Assembly 480, and worked with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Mr. Schmidt is survived by his sisters, Camilla Campau of St. Clair Shores and Rosamond Robinson of Essex, Ontario-Canada; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers, Gerald, Vincent and Cyril; and his sister, Bernadette Harradine. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady on the River Parish, Holy Cross Church, Marine City, with visiting in the church on Saturday 10 - 11 a.m. Arrangements were entrusted to Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City. www.bowerrosefuneralhome.com
