Russell S. Abate

Russell S. Abate Jeddo Russell S. Abate, 77, of Jeddo, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at his home of natural causes. He was born October 1, 1935 in Detroit to the late Louis and Maria Abate. He married Kathy Jurczak on September 18, 1965 in Detroit. Russell retired as a mechanic from General Motors after more than 20 years of service. He owned and operated for more than 15 years a mechanic's garage with his brother Tom before working for GM. He also worked for Grant Township for a couple of years mowing grass and doing maintenance work. He was a volunteer firefighter for 38 years for East Detroit and Grant Township and also volunteered at Port Huron Hospital. He was a member of St. Edward on The Lake Catholic Church. Russell enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, gambling and going up North with his family. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathy; His son, Louie Abate; two daughters, Maria Polechonski and Kathy (Ben) Ward; three grandchildren, Russell Ward, Michal Polechonski, and Brianna Ward; three step grandchildren, Jason (Erin) Ward and Benny and Jordan Ward; five step great grandchildren, Jozlin, Hailey, Colin, Ellie, and Marley; his sister, Bernadette Reed; several nieces and nephews; and good friends, Ed, Jack and Bill. He is preceded in death by his brother, Tom Randazzo. Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street, Port Huron. A fireman's service will start at 6:30 p.m. and a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013 in St. Edward on The Lake Catholic Church with one hour of visitation prior to the service. The Reverend Father Lee Acervo will officiate. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, Fargo. Memorials may be made to St. Edward on The Lake Catholic Church or Grant Twp.
