C. Edward Collins Obituary
C. Edward "Ed" Collins

Port Huron

C. Edward "Ed" Collins, 80 of Port Huron, passed away peacefully in his residence surrounded by his family on Monday, November 04, 2013 following a short illness.  He was born to Cornelius and Smelia Collins on May 17, 1933 in Detroit, MI, attended Catholic grade schools, and graduated from the Shrine of the Little Flower High School.

After graduation, Ed joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean Conflict.  During his time in the service, he met and soon married Lorene Barbour on December 29, 1956 in Helena, Montana.

After the service, Ed became a technical writer in aviation and aerospace, the first of three distinguished careers.  He worked on a number of high-profile programs, including Apollo, NERVA, and the Manned Lunar Base, the latter two projects while a member of the Advanced Projects Group at the Westinghouse Astronuclear Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA.  He later did graduate studies in ethics at International College.  As part of his studies, Ed combined epistemological principles with those of Behavioral psychology to create a unique approach to curriculum analysis and course design.  His second career was as an instructor at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton.  In the 1980s he applied the same approach in a freelance investigation of flight training methods. Flying Magazine published part of Ed's study as an article in October 1987.

At Prentice-Hall Canada's invitation, Ed and fellow NAIT faculty member Hugh Read wrote Plain English, the popularity of which prompted the Canadian Government to commission a special edition for its Armed Forces.  This third career included ten textbooks, a novel published under a pseudonym, and many articles on a variety of subjects. His community activities included teaching music and conducting the Sweet SUE Band, which performed at various community functions.

Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lorene E. Collins; his five children, Sean (Catherine) Collins of Ojai, CA, Kathy Satterwhite of San Jose, CA, Stephen (Katriana) Collins of Sarnia, Ontario, Michael (Karen) Collins of Santa Paula, CA, & Deidre Collins of Sarnia, Ontario; and 28 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two sons, Brian and Nicholas Collins.

Visitation will be on Thursday, November 7, 2013 beginning with a rosary recitation at 4:00 p.m., and ending at 6:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Edward on the Lake Catholic Church with visitation in the church beginning at 10:00 a.m.  The Rev. Fr. Lee Acervo will preside.  Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery under the direction of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.
