Dorothy Burns Obituary

Dorothy M. Burns

Port Huron

Dorothy M. Burns, 90,  died Sunday, August 4, 2013 in the Blue Water Hospice Home.

She was born November 19, 1922 in Port Huron to the late Keith and Cora Thomas. She married Herbert M. Burns on June 14, 1946 in Port Huron. He died February 5, 2002. She married Graydon K. Morrison on December 11, 2004 and he died May 4, 2007.

Mrs. Burns was a loving wife, mother and a very remarkable person. She was salutatorian of her graduating class, a member of the National Honor Society and the first woman admitted to the Port Huron High School band where she played lead trombone. After graduation she was employed by Bell Telephone as a construction clerk and assignment clerk from 1940-1945.

Dorothy was a very gifted artist and a member of the Blue Water Art Association and earned several honors for her paintings. She was a master of many mediums, including oil, acrylic, water color, chalk, pencil and tissue paper collage; as well as being adept at wood and soap carving. A favorite activity was making pet rocks. She would use stones from Lake Huron and paint a beloved dog or cat on them as keepsakes for their owners. She was a member of the Port Huron Museum, Hiking Club, Red Hat Society, Over Fifty Follies and YMCA. She volunteered at Port Huron Hospital for 32 years and was a life member of the auxiliary. She enjoyed belonging to the E.A.A. and volunteered at the St. Clair County Airport for the fly-in breakfasts. Loving dancing, she participated in the Senior flappers, Hula Grannies, and Cloggers at the Port Huron Senior Center. She was an election inspector for several years at the Port Huron Township voting polls. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and had a zest for life that was unquenchable.

She is survived by four children, Diane (Phil) Merriman of Port Sanilac, Jeffery (Marilynn) Burns of Independence, Oregon, Suzanne Bacheller of Clyde and Roy Burns of St. Clair; five grandchildren, John and Matthew Burns, Scott Cameron, Keith and Kara Bacheller; and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Donald (Joanne) Thomas and their son, Ken Thomas; a brother-in-law, Robert W. Burns; two stepsons, Dr. Timothy Morrison and sons, Patrick and Colin, and Thomas Morrison and son, Edward.

She was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, William Cameron and David Bacheller; a niece, Elizabeth Thomas; and a step-daughter-in-law, Karen Morrison.

Dorothy has three special friends, Bob Johnson, Bill Miskell and Jeff Hendrickson, to whom she will always be grateful for their friendship, help and support.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2013 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend Jason Pittman of First Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Port Huron Township.

Hi Jeff & Diane,

This is Dennis Payton from the Payton family that used to live on the same block as you on 20th street when growing up as a kid. We have all since moved out of Michigan, but I saw a friend of mine post the passing of your mother.

Please know that me and my two sisters, Judi and Janie, are lifting you and your family up in prayer as you face the days and weeks ahead. We lost both our parents within the last 7 years so we know the loss you are feeling.

We all have wonderful memories of growing up on that 20th street block.

Blessings and God's comfort to you all.
