Obituary Condolences

Lorraine Therese Smith Formerly of Avoca Lorraine Therese Smith, 78, formerly of Avoca, passed away on March 22, 2013 in McLaren- Lapeer Regional Hospital after a long illness. She was born to Joseph and Sophie Burke on December 3, 1934 in Detroit, MI. Lorraine attended Dominican Catholic school in Detroit and graduated with honors. She attended Mt. Carmel Mercy School of Nursing in the 1950's and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Lorraine excelled in nursing and has worked at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe, MI and all of her children were born there as well. Lorraine also worked at Harrison Hospital in the capacity of an Emergency Room Nurse and as the afternoon shift Nursing Supervisor. In the last part of her nursing career she worked as an Emergency Room at Mercy Hospital, Port Huron. Lorraine was regarded as an extremely sharp and competent nurse. She worked at Mercy Hospital's Emergency Room until she retired in 1991. On May 25, 1956, Lorraine Therese Burke married Ralph Lee Smith and remained his wife and travel companion until his death on October 5, 1997. They enjoyed traveling in their motor-home and spent their winters in Texas with their beloved dogs. Lorraine is survived by her six children. Donna Marie (John) Gilbert of Mt. Morris, Diane Therese (Keith) Wenning of St. Clair, Daniel Lee (Sandra) Smith of Marysville, Laurie Ann (Todd) Taylor of Avoca, Gordon Paul (Sue Strange) Smith of Yale and David Smith of Avoca, grandchildren Christopher Lee Gilbert, Jason (Gemma) Gilbert, Brian (Nicole) Gilbert, Jaclyn (Brian) Farr, Sheena Gilbert, Benjamin James (Christine) Smith, Nathan Albert Smith, Jessica Diane (Chance) Estep, LeeAnn Holsworth, Andrew Smith, Rachel Smith and Emily Smith. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Chattley and Jonathon Gilbert, Aiden Smith, Michelle Gilbert, Major Gilbert and Chance and Leeson Estep. She is survived by her brother, Dennis Burke of Washington Twp. Lorraine is also survived by her dear friend, Jeanne Criger, whose unfailing support and kindness has been greatly appreciated by our entire family over the years. The family would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Suncrest Nursing Home in Lapeer for their wonderful care over the years. Lorraine had a great love of reading and was a Friend of the Yale Library. She enjoyed sneaking off to play Bingo in Canada, Elvis Presley's music, James Bond films and was a long-time fan of the Detroit Tigers. She greatly enjoyed her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also dearly loved her dogs, in order, Claire, Loralee, Cinderella and Mandy. Visitation will be at the Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 225 Main Street, Imlay City from 5 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. The funeral service will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lapeer on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Fr. Clement Suhy will officiate.
