Velma Shepherd Obituary
Velma Jane (Johnston) Shepherd

Port Huron

Velma Jane (Johnston) Shepherd, 91 of Port Huron, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Marwood Nursing and Rehab, Port Huron, after a long illness. Velma was born at home on September 23, 1922 to James and Myrtle (Young) Johnston, 2791 Keewahdin Drive, Fort Gratiot. (just east of Birchwood Mall) She attended elementary and grade schools in Fort Gratiot and graduated from Port Huron High School in 1940; the same year she married Homer F. Shepherd.

Velma was a homemaker and in 1962, after raising two children, she entered the work force. She became office manager of Port Huron High School and secretary to the principle. Later she moved to Port Huron Northern in the same position; retiring in 1988. Velma loved the school system and being close to young people. Her early ambition was to be a schoolteacher but marriage and World War II changed the direction of her life. Her career in the public school system helped overcome her disappointment.

Velma loved to decorate and was a master at wallpapering; not only her own home but the homes of her children and grandchildren. She was also a long time member of Town Hall and rarely missed a presentation. She and her "girlfriends" would always have lunch afterward and most of the time they went for Chinese food because that was her favorite.  A rabid Detroit Tiger fan, her husband, Homer (who passed away in February 2012) said the only time he could not get her attention was when the Tigers were on the television or radio.

Velma was also the consummate babysitter for her grandchildren and her love of children was apparent to all who knew her. She never missed an opportunity to hug, rock, or just plain listen to a child of any age. She attended many of her grandson's little league baseball games and school functions for all her grandchildren.

Velma is survived by two children, Sharon L. (Dale) Hayden of Fort Gratiot, son Frank H. (Beth) Shepherd of Charlevoix, Michigan; eight grandchildren; Scott  (Kimberly) Falk, Randy (Sue) Falk, Melanie Shepherd, Mark Shepherd, Kimberly Lust Shepherd, Christine (Dan) Muenzer, Katherine(Joe) Haas Marchese, and Jimmy Shepherd; twelve great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; two brothers, William (Sharon) Johnston, and Louis (Kay) Johnston, all of Port Huron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer F. Shepherd; a son, Robert Louis Shepherd; three brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening, January 26th at Smith Family Home North, 1525 Hancock St. with a memorial service at the funeral home on Monday, January 27th at11:00 a.m. preceded by a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Marwood Nursing and Rehab Building Fund, 1300 Beard Street, Port Huron, Michigan 48060.  To send condolences visit smithfamilyfuneralhome.com
