William L. Curtis
The Guest Book is expired.
William L. Curtis made his way home July 6, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born in St. Clair, February 8, 1936 to William J. and Marion (Eldridge) Curtis. He graduated from St. Clair High School and was drafted into the United States Army, serving for two years. After that, he worked for 30 years in the Army National Guard, retiring in 1991. While in the service, he married Patricia L. Balinski on April 4, 1959, celebrating 55 years of marriage this year. They lived in Utica before moving to Sanford Lake. They enjoyed 34 years of fishing, boating, camping and spending time with their three children, grandchildren and extended family and friends. Bill was instrumental in organizing the "Over 50" softball league, and playing on the J. C. Penney team with friends who also enjoyed the sport. The last 5 ½ years they lived in Midland, enjoying the Rail Trail, Farmers Market, and the Great Lakes Loons ball games. Many a day you would find him riding his motorized scooter on the Rail Trail, an activity he loved until he could no longer leave his home.
He is survived by his wife Pat, sons William (Julie) Curtis, Timothy (Marcella) Curtis, daughter Karen (Jeffrey) Wasmer; grandchildren Jennifer, Elizabeth, Stephanie, Matthew, Ryan, Mossimo, Jacob, Caileigh and Cassie; great grandchildren Lorelai and Logan; brothers Arthur, Donald (Charlotte), and his sister Mary Walczak. Bill also held close to his heart his wife's family, spending many happy times together. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James and Robert, sister Ruth, niece Linda and nephew Allan.
He embraced the Catholic Church in May, 2012, and his faith continued to be very important to him. He treasured his family and friends and the many good times spent with them. His family thanks them for their help and support during Bill's illness. His family also thanks MidMichigan Home Care, especially Carol and Cindy who were a great comfort to him.
The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 am, Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Our Lady of Grace, 2500 N. West River Road, Sanford, with Father Daniel Fox OFM Cap officiating. Bill's family will receive friends at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler Street, on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm, and at the church on Thursday from 10 am until time of services. A Vigil for the Deceased will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7 pm.
Besides his family and friends, he loved his country. His favorite song was "Proud to be an American", and he took great pleasure in seeing the American Flag flying. Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider MidMichigan Medical Center, for use in COPD rehabilitation.
