Lawrence R. "Larry" Manz Port Huron Lawrence R. "Larry" Manz, 82, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2011 in Port Huron Hospital following a very short illness. He was born to Norman and Marvel Manz on April 9, 1928 in Detroit, attended the Detroit Public Schools, and graduated from Southeastern High School in 1946. While at Southeastern, Larry played guard on the school's 1945 Detroit Public Schools championship basketball team and was a member of the school's 1945 championship tennis team. Following graduation he received a full athletic scholarship to Toledo University where he played football, basketball, and baseball before transferring to Michigan State University where he received his BS degree in 1950. In 1957 he earned his Masters Degree from Wayne State University. On July 14, 1950 Larry married Doralie Clem in Detroit. He then was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in Korea from 1951 to 1953 and directed an artillery battery with the 145th Artillery, 5th Army. While serving he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon his return to the Detroit area, Larry was employed by the Detroit Public Schools where he was instrumental in setting up the Headstart program. At that time he and Dody lived in Southgate, MI where he served as President of the Southgate School Board. In 1969 they moved to Port Huron when Larry was named Athletic Director for the Port Huron Area School District. He had many accomplishments as athletic director including beginning interscholastic girls athletics and bringing boys hockey to both high schools in 1974. The Thanksgiving high school hockey tournament including Port Huron, Port Huron Northern, Marysville, and St. Clair is now known as the Larry Manz Holiday Hockey Tournament. Larry was a long-time member of Port Huron Golf Club and served as Club President in 1992. In 2006, he was inducted into the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame. Larry is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Dody Manz; his three children, Karen (Tom) Turner of Montoursville, PA, Kyle (Len) Bataglia of Clinton Twp., and Paul (Carrie) Manz of Bloomfield Hills; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his brother, Howard (Joyce) Manz of Clarkston; a brother-in-law, William Snow of Clinton Twp.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Norene Snow. A memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Contributions may be made in Larry's memory to the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame or the charity of the donor's choice.
