Edward John LeTarte Fort Gratiot 89, of Fort Gratiot, formerly of Memphis, passed away after a brief illness Sunday, September 2, 2012, at home with family by his side. He was born in Detroit, May 23, 1923, the son of the late George Michael and Florence (Wuerth) LeTarte. His marriage to Pauline Elizabeth Remski was January 27, 1951, at Annunciation Catholic Church, Detroit. "Ed" was an Annunciation High School graduate then ended his University of Detroit attendance to volunteer to serve his country with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942-1944. He flew 65 successful missions as a bombardier navigator over Italy and continued his service with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of American Legion, Post #8, Disabled Vets of America and the Knights of Columbus of Memphis and, also, Immaculate Council, #8274 of St. Edwards on the Lake. Ed was a parishioner of St. Edward on the Lake, Lakeport and a former parishioner of Holy Family Parish Catholic Church, Memphis. He worked several jobs, including Detroit City surveyor and bus driver, before working nearly 30 years for his family's LeTarte Company. Ed then worked for the I.R.S. as a revenue officer for 13 years where he quickly became an instructor. Ed volunteered at Focus Hope, Detroit, and had also been a Boy Scout Leader and helped teach catechism with his wife. He was creator of "Pop's Props" in which he provided many hand mad props for the Nutcracker Ballet productions for The Dance Company Conservatory, Inc., Port Huron. Ed enjoyed building models and painting and loved his music. Surviving in addition to Pauline, his wife of 61 years, are two sons, Lawrence R. of Oklahoma City and Edward G. (Deborah) LeTarte of Port Huron and two daughters, Geraldine M. Schultz of Fort Gratiot and Pauline M. (Antonio) DelVillano of Fraser; ten grandchildren, Melissa, Christina, Stephanie, Gabrielle (Ryan) Sharrow, James N. Shultz, Pauline Schultz, Amanda, Sarah, Antoinette and Aaron; nine great-grandchildren; beloved "daughter", Liliana Bogoto of Paraguay; siblings, Frank M. LeTarte, Walter G. LeTarte, Phyllis Ring and Florence L. Remski, as well as many nieces, nephews and many friends. He is preceded in death by a brother, Joseph George LeTarte, sister-in-law, Beulah J. LeTarte and brother-in-law, Howard Ring. His family honors the memory of Ed and invite you to visit and share memories Wednesday 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond, with The Devine Mercy Chaplet being recited at the hour of mercy, 3:00 p.m. and rosary devotion services at 7:00 p.m. Rite of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Parish Catholic Church, Memphis, with 10:00 a.m. visiting. Fr. Lee Acervo, pastor of St. Edwards on the Lake Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Catholic Cemetery, Columbus Township.
