George Thomas Learned Port Huron George Thomas Learned, 85, of Port Huron entered Heaven on Saturday, November 10, 2012, after a lengthy illness. He was born July 29, 1927 to the late Ray and Myrtle Learned. He married Mildred Arleen Harrison on August 6, 1949 in Port Huron. She preceded him in death on March 27, 2010. George enjoyed fishing and hunting, but the joy of his life was sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with whomever he encountered. He and his wife Millie entered missionary service with SIM (Sudan Interior Mission) in 1950, and spent 41 years teaching in Nigeria and the Niger Republic. Known affectionately as "Malam Dogo" (the Tall Teacher), he taught many of the men and women who now lead the EERN (Evangelical Church of Niger). From 1965 until his retirement in 1991, he directed the Aguie Bible Training School. He was known for his mastery of the Hausa language and his rapport with the national people. He spent the last years of his life in the affectionate care of his daughter, Cathy, her husband Paul, and their children in Lapeer. George was a member of Griswold Street Baptist Church of Port Huron and Whispering Pines Baptist Church in Sebring, Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by three children, Cathleen (Paul) Sauve of Lapeer, Carmen (Tim) North of Port Huron and Paul (Lucy) Learned of Parma; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Tom. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2012 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home and from 10 - 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at the Griswold Street Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2012 in Griswold Street Baptist Church. Rev. James Pettit and Rev. Daniel Stewart will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Port Huron. Pallbearers will be Greg and Ben Learned, John, Joshua and Josiah Sauve. Honorary pallbearers will be Rich Learned, Dave Myer, Fred Swegles, Keith Stoner, Gaylord Feick, Don Jamison and Terry Coleman.
