Barbara Jane Shirkey Obituary
Barbara Jane Shirkey Port Huron Barbara Jane Shirkey, 96, formerly of Memphis, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Port Huron Hospital. She was born in Port Huron, December 30, 1915, the daughter of the late Fred and Mabel (Barrett) Wilson. Her marriage to Willis Shirkey was June 14, 1941 at her parents home in Port Huron. Willis died in March of 1988. Barbara was a 1934 Port Huron High School graduate. She moved to her farm in Wales Township June 30, 1941 where she resided for 70 years. She attended the former Congressional Church, Memphis, was an Eastern Star Life Member, former Girl Scout leader, Farm Bureau member and past member of the Lions Club. Barbara graduated from Hurley Hospital as a registered nurse in 1935, and worked at Port Huron Hospital and for 24 years at St. Joseph Hospital, Mt. Clemens before her retirement in 1975. She enjoyed traveling, and truly loved visiting the senior center in Richmond with their trips and card playing. She loved to travel with her husband when they were able. Surviving are two sons, Richard Shirkey of West Virginia and George (Margaret) Shirkey of Memphis; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Esper; seven grandchildren, Robert Shirkey, Leonard Shirkey, Julie (Michael) Kirschling, Christine Shirkey, Georgia (Marc) Loosvelt, Jennifer (Jaret) Paltzer and Susan (Ryan) Black; five great-grandchildren, Theodore Robert Loosvelt, William George Loosvelt, Michael Benjamin Paltzer, Eleanor Grace Shirkey and Connor James Paltzer as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by a son, Robert Shirkey (2006) and siblings, Thomas, Jerry, Robert Wilson and Ruth Fairman. Her family honors the memory of Barbara and invite you to visit and share memories Saturday, November 24, 2012, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Memphis. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. Rev. (James Huff), will officiate. Inurnment will be in Memphis Cemetery, Memphis. Arrangements provided by Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond.
