James Carr Obituary

James "Jim" Leo Carr, 77, of Durham, N.C., went to be with his Lord on Feb. 18, 2014. He is now at peace after a long struggle with illness.
Jim served Durham County as Clerk of Superior Court for 26 years before retiring and resuming the practice of law. He was a committed member of Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder for many years. In 2003 Jim was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Mike Easley for his service and contribution to the state of North Carolina. An honor key member of the Durham Civitan Club, he was also a member of the Durham Sports Club. Having graduated from the University of North Carolina, he was an avid follower of Tarheel athletics.
The son of Judge Leo and Mrs. Betty Knott Carr of Burlington, N.C., "Big Jim," as he was affectionately known to his family, is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joyce Carr; his daughter, Beverly Davis of Durham; his son, Thomas Lane of Wilmington; and four grandchildren, Charlie and Thomas Davis, Carl and Chris Lane. Also surviving are his two sisters, Betty Jane Pulkingham of Burlington and Nancy Carr Newman of Athens, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church in Durham on Thursday, February 27 at 12:30 p.m., with the Rev. Alan Poole and Ed Henegar officiating. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. in Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington..
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jim to Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army or The Durham Rescue Mission.
