BURLINGTON - Mr. Johnny "John" Sawyer, 93, of 1600 W. Front St., passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the Hospice Home after several months of failing health.
Born in Chowan County, he was the son of the late Miles Gordon Sawyer and the late Catherine Harris Sawyer and was married for over 39 years to Attie Lou Keck Sawyer, who died in 1984. Mr. Sawyer was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he served three years in Germany, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and receiving the American Theatre Campaign Medal, three Bronze Service Stars and a Victory Medal Distinguished Unit Badge. John lived in Florida and was a self-employed Realtor and Appraiser and received the MAI Designation with the Appraisal Institute before retiring and moving to Burlington. He attended Ireland Street Chapel.
Mr. Sawyer is survived by his son, Andrew Ladd Sawyer, of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Glenda Lee Baker Wilkinson and her husband, B.R., of Chester, Va.; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Audrey) Sawyer, Jennifer (Steve) Zuskin, Jason (Tracy) Wilkinson, and Jeremy (Debra) Wilkinson; great-grandchildren, Olive Sawyer, Winslow Sawyer, Madolyn Wilkinson, Mycah Wilkinson, Molly Wilkinson, Landen Wilkinson and Stephanie Zuskin; and a sister, Irene Wallace of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; four sisters, Myrtle Brantley, Madolyn Grubb, Catherine Braden and Elizabeth Sawyer; and four brothers, Ed, Ted, Mike and Frank Sawyer.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John Shields. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ireland Street Chapel, 430 S. Ireland St., Burlington, NC 27217 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
