GREEN LEVEL - Mrs. Gaynell Pounds Harrelson, 65, of 2421 Anderson Road, died May 19, 2015 at Hospice. She was the daughter of Mr. James Thomas Pounds Sr. and Mrs. Jennie Holt Pounds Walker (both deceased) and wife of Mr. Lacy Forrester Harrelson, deceased. She is survived by one daughter, Chaundra Harrelson (Carlton Parkes); one son, Emmett Crawford; four sisters, Kathy Sharpe, Vanessa Rone (Joseph), Asiah A. Elhassan (Khalid) and Wanda Walker; two brothers, Johnny Banks Walker and James Thomas Pounds Jr. (Lena); four grandchildren, Matthew, Mya', Sierra and Colton; one great-granddaughter, Aaliyah. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 25, 2015, at noon at Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Public viewing will be held on Sunday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GRAHAM - Doris Lee Headen, formerly of Hillsborough, N.C., died Thursday, May 28, 2015, in Liberty, N.C. She is the daughter of the late Viola Jones Herbert and Herman D. Herbert. She is survived by daughters, Gwendolyn Y. Daye (Larry) of Asheboro, N.C. and Wanda Kay Coletrane of Liberty, N.C.; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; eight sisters and two brothers. Public viewing will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015, with a family visitation Saturday evening from 6 to 8 at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home, 405 NC 57 North, Hillsborough, NC 27278. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Love in Action Church of God of Prophecy, 902 West Swannanoa Ave., Liberty, NC 27298 with one hour visitation before the funeral. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion AME Church cemetery on Monday, June 1, 2015, 5124 Hwy 86 North, Hillsborough, NC 27278.

GRAHAM - Jacob Fortune Kidd died May 18, 2015, in Old Fort, N.C. A resident of Atlanta, Ga., Jake was the son of Marshall Kidd, of Graham, N.C., and the late Janet Fortune. He is survived by his father; stepmother, Ida Kidd; and sister, Mariah Kidd of Graham; Phil Fortune (Jan) of Atlanta, Jean Kaplan (Art) of Graham, Carey Fortune (Regina) of Old Fort, Debbie Patterson and Kristy Keistler (Randy) of Concord, N.C., Toni Deal (Eric) of Mooresville, N.C., Susan Lewis and Theresa Junaluska (Carl) of Sylva, N.C., Rebecca Royal (Steve) of Mebane, N.C.; and many cousins. Born in Burlington, N.C., July 1, 1983, Jake grew up in Berea, Ky., and attended UNC-Greensboro, earning a BA in 2009 and, proudly, an MA in 2015. His goal was to work in town planning. Known for his humble heart and flexibility, Jake cared deeply about others and was fun to be around. He was drawn to technology, music, travel and progressive discussions. A good yarn would animate his engaging laughter. A service will be announced at a later date. King, Elaine Straughan*  
BURLINGTON - Elaine Straughan King, 63, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015, at her home. She was a native of Alamance County and the wife of the late Kenneth Ray King Sr. Elaine was employed with Glen Raven Mills for over 33 years and was a member of Altamahaw Baptist Church. She never met a stranger and was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors include her children, Christy Atkins and husband Kevin of Elon, Kenneth Ray King Jr. of Graham, Devon Lopez and fiancé Matt Craven of Graham and Heather Hicks and husband Donald of Burlington; grandchildren, Courtney Kincer and husband Zane of Burlington, Kristina Atkins of Elon, Skylar Baken of Graham, Amber Lopez of Graham, twins –Ethan and Gavin Lopez of Graham, Kadyn Hicks of Burlington and Wyatt Hicks of Burlington; father, Lynwood Russell Straughan and wife Ruth of Burlington; sisters, Lisa Straughan and companion Lisa Marie Bouchey of Thomasville and Roseanna Gordon and husband Jarrell of Thomasville; brothers, Larry Baken and wife Linda of Burlington, Roy Baken and wife Glenda of Elon, Bryan Baken and wife Laurie of Thomasville and George Baken and wife Sarah of Burlington. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, JoeAnn Wrenn Baken and Larry Cone Baken. A service to celebrate her life will be conducted Sunday, May 24, 2015, at 3 p.m. in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Joe Seay. BURLINGTON - Ruth Marlene Ligon, 74, passed away May 18, 2015 at White Oak Manor after many years of failing health. A native of Gaston County, she was born June 21, 1940 to the late Oliver Monroe Taylor and Vergie Absher Taylor. She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Shiles Rambeaut and husband Darrell of Burlington, Debbie Shiles Johnson and husband Michael of Hickory, Regina Shiles Ellis and husband Steve of Campobello, SC; sons, Ronald "Bubba" Eugene Shiles, Jr. and wife Tracy of Gastonia and Pastor Billy Ginn and wife Tina of York, SC; grandchildren, Jaclyn Crisp Davis and husband Caleb, Chevas Smith, Gavin Smith and wife Nikki, Michael Ellis, Lauren Ellis Smith and husband Chris, Samuel Shiles, Nicholas Shiles, Danika Jakab and husband Dustin, Rebekah Ginn and Moriah Ginn; six great grandchildren; sisters, Judy Hovis, Brenda Giles and husband Barney; brothers, Bob Wolfe, Monroe Taylor and wife Frances and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Eddie Taylor. The family would like to thank the nurses at White Oak Manor for their loving care and support during Ruth's illness. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:30pm on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Ruth Johnson. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home. Following the service the family has invited everyone to join them for a meal at Bible Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. MOORESVILLE, N.C. - Newman Banks McDade, 64, passed away, May 25, 2015, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, N.C. He was born June 25, 1950, in Alamance County, N.C., to the late Millard Banks McDade and Margaret Lucille Cox McDade. Newman was the owner of the residential construction company, McDade Construction Inc. Survivors include his wife, Judy McDade; sons, Newman Banks McDade II and wife Cindy of Burlington, N.C. and Downing Cox McDade of Redding, Calif.; and brother, Michael McDade of Youngsville, N.C. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, with the Rev. Sammy Pierce officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. prior to the service in the sanctuary. Burial will be private.
