Alspaugh, Carolyn*  
GRAHAM-Mrs. Carolyn Byrum Alspaugh, 99, a resident of the Twin Lakes community, formerly of Gates Ave., Graham, died Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Alspaugh was a native of Winston-Salem and was wife of the late John Carlyle "Jack" Alspaugh. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Byrum and the late Eula Hall Byrum. Mrs. Alspaugh was a retired elementary school teacher. She last taught third grade at Eastlawn Elementary School. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church for over 66 years, and was a member of the Ladies Circle. Mrs. Alspaugh was survived by her adoptive family and care givers, Art and Marsha Thomas of Graham. She also considered Peter Jukoski of Indian Trail, Dan and Ruth Leeper of Ridgeway, VA, Sarah Franks of New Jersey and Mary Watson of Washington, DC her children; along with Alex Jukoski, Lucy and Daniel Franks whom she loved as great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 21, at 2 P.M. in the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington. Officiating will be the Rev. Patrick Murphy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SPCA of the Triad, PO Box 4461, Greensboro, NC 27404. Online condolences may be made at www.richandthompson.com

Bowman, John Adolphus "J.A."*  
BURLINGTON – Mr. John Adolphus "J.A." Bowman, 87, of Burlington, passed away at the Hospice Home on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 12:45 p.m. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Deloris Robertson Bowman, who survives and the son of James Scarborough Bowman, Sr. and Bertha Pendergraph Bowman, both deceased. Mr. Bowman was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and a retired painting contractor. Since 1956, he was a member of Trinity Worship Center. He was also a member of the Gideons International since 1973 where he was active in the Burlington Camp and the Alamance West Camp. In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two children, Jason Dean Bowman of Burlington and Janet Leigh Bowman Johnson (Andrew Murray) of Daytona Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Allison Johnson McDaniel (Nicholas), Anna Johnson, John Michael Bowman, Susan Bowman and Robert Bowman; a great-grandchild, Sophia McDaniel; and three siblings, Julia Bowman Reaves, Jack Bowman (Doris) and Bill Bowman (Joyce). He was preceded in death by a brother, James Scarborough Bowman, II. The funeral service will be conducted at Trinity Worship Center on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 2 p.m. by Rev. Darrell Cox with the family receiving friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to Trinity Worship Center, 3157 S Church Street, Burlington, NC 27215 or online at trinityworship.net . ELON – Michael Brooks, 55, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the Hospice Home in Burlington. A native of Alamance County, he was born to the late Curtis Dean and Wanda Anderson Brooks and was the husband of 30 years to Lisa Kay Smith Brooks of the home. Michael is also survived by his son, Michael Allen Brooks (Chasity) and his granddaughter, Payton Brooks. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held 3 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Larry Lamberth with the burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at Lowe Funeral Home and other times at the son's home. Carter, Sharon*  
ELON – Mrs. Sharon Lane Arwood Carter, 61, transitioned Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Alamance Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family. Born in Charlotte, she moved to Burlington when she was nine and graduated as valedictorian from Southern Alamance High School in 1973. Sherry, as she was known to friends and family, dedicated her life to serving others. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, graduating summa cum laude and finishing second in the class of 1977. As a neonatal intensive care nurse at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, Sherry tended to the most vulnerable newborns and saved countless lives. She also taught as a clinical instructor in nursing at Alamance Community College. Sherry traveled on several missions to the Dominican Republic as a member of Healing the Children, assisting with ocular diagnostics and surgery. She became Alamance County's first wildlife rehabilitator in 1989 and served as a board member and medical consultant for Kindred Spirits Wildlife Center beginning in 1991. Sherry also wrote humorous stories and local features for City-County Magazine. Sherry is survived by her husband, Billy, with whom she celebrated their 40th anniversary on May 15; her son, Dr. Scott A. Carter, and his wife Katherine Carter McEnaney; and her sisters, Dr. Debra Clare and husband Dr. James Clare, and Dr. Laura Arwood. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Alexander and Bertie Taylor Arwood. She also leaves behind loving memories for her special sisters, Lorraine, Debra, Betsy, Linda and Dana. A private service was held at Lowe Funeral Home on Thursday, July 21. A lifelong advocate of education, Sherry requested that those wishing to honor her life contribute to an education fund for a child or loved one in lieu of flowers or other memorials.
