James H. Evans

BURLINGTON - James H. Evans, 85, of Burlington, died May 8, 2013 at Alamance Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Dec. 24, 1927 in Caswell County, N.C, to Posie Daniel Evans and Ollie Smith Evans, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Barbara Dabbs Evans, two brothers, Buddy and Herman, and sister Sadie.
James served in the U.S Army as a member of the 82nd Heavy Tank Battalion, stationed at Camp Polk, La. He worked for Burlington Industries as a Loom Fixer for 34 years, while at the same time being a farmer who raised tobacco and tended his Black Angus cows. He enjoyed his family and friends, and tinkering with one of his tractors or other projects. He was a man of few words who understood the significance of silence and adeptly conveyed a deep understanding through his choice of words. He spoke volumes with a smile, a wave of his hand, or a blown kiss. He was best defined by his consistent, kind actions, his gentle way, his dry humor, and love for his family that is reflected by the deep, unwavering love of his family for him.
He is survived by his second wife, Estelle Godwin Evans; daughters, M. Malissa Evans, Sandra Evans Gerringer (Richard), G. Dawne Evans (Ronald Aldridge); son, Eric Evan Evans (Stacie); sister, Marie Overman; sister-in-law, Jo Tew, 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will celebrate his life at a visitation on Friday, May 10, at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington from 6 to 8 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2013, in the Chapel at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington, officiated by the Rev. Joseph Lindell Godwin and the Rev. Joe Godwin. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, with military honors.
