GREENSBORO - Mr. James "Dale" Shepherd, 78, of Greensboro, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2013 at Wesley Long Hospital.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Carl Utley. A private burial will be held at Friedan's Lutheran Church cemetery in Gibsonville.
Dale was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Gibsonville, the son of the Rev. James Banks Shepherd and Pearl Nester Shepherd. He grew up in Haw River, N.C. where he graduated from Haw River High School obtaining an athletic scholarship to Duke University. He attended Duke University briefly before he transferred to Elon College. He attended Elon College for two years before he was drafted into the U.S. Army
. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Dale re-entered Elon College and received a degree in Political Science. He was accepted to the University of North Carolina Law School and graduated from the Carolina Law School in 1963 with a Juris Doctorate degree in law.
After graduating from law school, Dale went to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority until he returned to North Carolina to serve as counsel in the North Carolina Attorney General's office from 1967 to 1971. He later came to Greensboro and worked for the Guilford County Public Defenders' office until he accepted a position with the law firm now known as Hill, Evans, Jordan & Beatty. He later took a position with the Greensboro City Attorney's office from 1975 to 1991 until he retired. After retiring, Dale and Dick Warren formed an association and successfully practiced law until Mr. Warren retired. Dale then became an associate in the law firm of Maddox & Gorham, P.A., a position he held until his death.
In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his sister, Jacqueline Haymore.
Surviving are his brother, Blaine "Buddy" Shepherd of Wilmington; Godson, James Dale Ray of Napa Valley, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
