GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Joan Cates Thompson, 82, of 220 Circle Drive, Gibsonville, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
A native of Gibsonville, Mrs. Thompson was the wife of the late Ralph Ansel Thompson and the daughter of the late Willie C. Cates and the late Pauline Evans Cates.
Mrs. Thompson was a retired textile employee, having worked at Liberty Hosiery and Springwood Textile.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Gibsonville, serving as teacher of the Fidelis Sunday School Class for 20 years. She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and was known for her compassion as a caregiver to everyone in the community. She loved her family dearly.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Robin Hall and her fiancé, Harold Brincefield, of the home; Angela Walker and her husband, Luke of Gibsonville; three grandchildren, Heather Ivey and husband Jason Ivey, Missy Ann Thompson and fiancé, Jason Cook and Allison Donley and boyfriend, Chris Baker; five great-grandchildren, Justin Chad Donley, Jr., Shawn Gerald Donley, Dakota Ivey, Peyton Ivey and Natalie Morgan Cook; two sisters, Linda Mann of Gibsonville and Deborah Boone and her husband, Michael, Oak Ridge and one brother, Donald Cates and his wife, Cindy, of Burlington.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Keyleigh Marie Donley and Dalton Robert Ivey; two sisters, Esquiredo "Skeeter" Myers and Louise Farrior and one brother, Winfred Cates.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Gibsonville. Officiating will be the Rev. Jim Upchurch and the Rev. Dr. Howard Thompson. Burial will be in Gibsonville City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington, Tuesday evening, from 6 until 8. Other times they will be at the residence.
