BURLINGTON - John William (Bill) Hopper, 80, died at the Homeplace of Burlington on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at 4:30 a.m.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of John William Hopper Sr. and Maie Bell Parker Sykes, both deceased. A graduate of Williams High School, he was a veteran of the U. S. Army
, having served in the special Military Police unit while in Germany during the time of the Korean Conflict
. Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington where he participated in the Open Door church school class. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 10607, the Burlington Elks Lodge
and the Burlington Moose Lodge. He was a strong supporter of theater in Alamance County and served for many years on the board of The Gallery Players. For 50 years, Bill owned and successfully operated the Fashionette Dress Shop in downtown Burlington. In his many professional and personal relationships, Bill consistently exhibited an honesty of purpose, an exuberant and compassionate spirit, and a great sense of love and care for his many friends.
Survivors include two nephews, Michael Bryan and Boyd Bryan, one great nephew and two great nieces, all of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sandra Bryan.
A memorial service will be conducted by Dr. Ronald Shive, the Rev. Norman Whitney and Dr. Dace Lewis at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at 2 p.m. Family and friends may greet each other immediately after the service.
