BURLINGTON, N.C. - Lillian Rascoe Bowland, daughter of Ollie Ector and Arthur Rascoe, wife of William Bowland for 60 years, beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt died Aug. 19, 2013 at the age of 92.
She lived at home, with substantial assistance from her daughter, Dale, until three months before her death. She was devoted to her family, and she persevered through life's obstacles with great determination. She loved traveling with family, especially spending time at Emerald Isle beach. Christmas was her favorite time of year, because the season always meant gathering with family.
Lillian learned early in life to be strong. Focus, character, doing things the right way and a guiding sense of morality were among her core characteristics. She knew that nothing in life was just given, that it had to be earned, and she was grateful for the freedom and opportunities she was able to experience.
She graduated from Pleasant Grove School and then completed a one-year business course at Elon College. She retired from Brown-Wooten Hosiery Mill, where she was an office worker for 27 years. During her work life, she became determined that both her children would finish college and she ensured that they did.
She loved to cook, and she was really good at it, with particular accomplishments in fried chicken, fresh vegetables, biscuits, cakes and pies. She was a devoted member of Union Ridge Church, where she was active in the Richard Jackson Circle for over 50 years. The Rascoes and the Bowlands have been members of Union Ridge for generations, and, along with the Chandlers, they have maintained a strong sense of family, centered in the church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Bowland; sister, Nellie Chandler; brother, Levi Rascoe; her dog, Scamp; and her calico grandcat, Nikki, who understood and loved the phrase, "We're going to Grandma's."
She is survived by her daughter, Dale Batchelor (wife of John Batchelor) of Greensboro; son, Preston Bowland (husband of Pat Bowland) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; grandchildren, Brittany Virginia and Matthew Preston Bowland of Murfreesboro; sister-in-law, Mavis Bowland; nieces and nephews, Danny Bowland, Betty Jo Loy, Eddie Rascoe, Kathy Bradham, Becky Whitlow and Henry Chandler; as well as a lifelong special friend and neighbor, Carol Richard; and close friend Louise Rainey.
The family is especially grateful for the assistance of caretakers Sally Nash and Mertis Cheely, as well as the staff of Hospice Home, who provided invaluable assistance during the latter period of her life, to numerous employees at Burlington Home Depot, who welcomed Lillian for her daily indoor walks (and occasional purchases), as long as she was able.
The family will meet friends at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, and at other times at Lillian's home, 403 Alamance Road, Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at Union Ridge Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, by the Rev. Dan Ficklin and the Rev. Jim Rosser, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
Donations in Lillian's memory may be made to the Union Ridge Church Activities Center Fund, 115 Alamance-Union Ridge Road, Burlington 27217 and to Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home, 918 Chapel Hill Road Burlington, NC 27215.
