Mrs. Luzette Callum Brown

BURLINGTON - Luzette Callum Brown, 86, of Burlington, died at the Hospice Home of Alamance- Caswell on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 7:50 a.m.
Luzette was the daughter of Martha and Travis Brodnax Callum and was born December 8, 1926 in Greensboro. She moved to Raleigh in 1940 where she attended Broughton High School and was graduated from St. Mary's Junior College in 1945 and UNC at Chapel Hill in 1947. At UNC at Chapel Hill, she joined Delta Delta Delta Sorority. After graduating, she worked for the N. C. State Auditor in Raleigh and became a member of The Raleigh Junior League.
In August 1948, she married William Walter Brown in St. Mary's Chapel and then moved to Burlington. There, she was a president of The Burlington Service League, a member of the D.A.R., The Heritage Book Club, the Historical Book Club of N.C., the Dogwood Garden Club, the Mayflower Society and the Alamance Country Club. A lifelong Episcopalian, Luzette was a member of the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild for 25 years. She was active in the Alamance Arts Council where she was a docent for 10 years, and also a docent at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh for many years. She was an accomplished artist who particularly enjoyed painting portraits over the years.
Luzette was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William Walter Brown, in 2008.
She is survived by her son, William Walter Brown Jr. and wife Janet of Burlington; daughter, Marion Martha Brown Walsh and husband Lee of Raleigh; grandchildren, Walter Callum Brown and wife Ashleigh of Burlington, William Travis Brown and wife Alexis of Columbia, S.C. and Eugene Leigh Walsh of Raleigh, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Gracie and Emma Brown of Burlington and Paul Brown of Columbia, S.C.
A graveside service will be conducted at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Adam Shoemaker with the family receiving friends at the residence, 1901 Sunnybrook Drive, Burlington, N.C. following the service.
The family would like express their gratitude to Johnnie Ellison for the kindnesses extended to Mrs. Brown.
