BURLINGTON - Mrs. Marilyn Shannon, 80, passed away July 9, 2013 at Alamance House with her family at her side.
Marilyn was born Nov. 22, 1932 at home, on a farm near Pierpont, S.D. She attended a one room country school until the eighth grade, then attended Pierpont High School where she captured the eye of Jerry Shannon. She attended college for one year before she and Jerry were married on June 12, 1952. They lived in Newport, R.I. and Green Cove Springs, Fla. during Jerry's four years of U.S. Naval service.
After moving to North Carolina, Marilyn worked in the Sears administrative office for nearly 26 years. She enjoyed each day and the close friendship of many co-workers. She was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church, Adult Sunday School Class and the Friendship Circle.
She was predeceased in life by her parents, Freeman and Helen Martyn; and sister, Mavis Bebo.
In addition to her husband, Jerry, she is survived by two daughters, Jane Pope and husband Bob from Rocky Mount, N.C. and Jill Iversen and husband Dave from San Diego, Calif.; son, Mike Shannon and wife Anne from Hampstead, N.C.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister, Mae Moxness of Watertown S.D.
A memorial service will be conducted in the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Carl Parsons, with the family receiving friends from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. prior to the service. At other times, they will be at the residence, 2717 May Drive, Burlington, N.C.
The family wishes to express deep thanks to the employees of Clare Bridge and Alamance House for their care and devotion to Marilyn. Also, a very special thanks is extended to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell.
