GRAHAM - Mrs. Mary Alice Helms Harden, 97, of The Village of Brookwood, formerly of Ward Street, Graham, NC, passed away at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at The Village of Brookwood.
She was the daughter of the late Malcolm Franklin and Flonnie Lasater Helms. Mrs. Harden was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Graham where she was a former Sunday School teacher as well as a member of the United Methodist Women and the Church Circle. She was also a member of the Home Economics Club, Leornian Book Club, a Girl Scout leader, and a teacher with the Alamance County Schools. She enjoyed square dancing with the Shallowford Squares and she was in bridge clubs, including the Maids and Matrons in Graham.
Mrs. Harden is a graduate of Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, NC, in 1939 with a Home Economics degree. Survivors include a daughter, Kay H. Kelly, of Burlington; son, Steven H. Harden, of Fayetteville; sister, Frances Gantt, of West Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Karie E. Blackwell and husband Keith, of Burlington, and Joseph Edwards, of Burlington; great-grandchildren, Brett and Jasmine Edwards, and Keileigh and Jade Blackwell; great-great-grandson, Jamison Burke. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Junius Holt Harden; sister, Kate Helms; brother, Col. Charles L. Helms.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Graham with the the Rev. Kevin Baker officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church on Tuesday, and other times at the residence of the daughter, Kay, at 2225 Delaney Drive, Suite 111, Burlington, NC. Burial will follow in Providence Memorial Cemetery in Graham. McClure Funeral Service in Graham is in charge of arrangements.
