BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mary Ellen Gorman Osius, 82, of The Village at Brookwood, died Feb. 12 in the Skilled Nursing Unit of The Village.
She was born in Kansas City, Mo., the only daughter of the late John L. Gorman and Mary Rose Hudson Gorman. Almost all of her youth was spent in Tulsa, Okla., where she was graduated from Will Rogers High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Oklahoma A&M College (later Oklahoma State University.)
She taught one semester in the Tulsa Public School System and later in a private pre-school in Springfield, Va., where she and her husband, Larry C. Osius, lived for 28 years.
She and her husband retired to the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area in 1990 and lived there for 13 years before moving to The Village at Brookwood in Burlington in 2003. She was a volunteer in several food dispensaries in Virginia, South Carolina, and at Loaves & Fishes in Burlington.
One of her greatest pleasures was preparing dinners for her children and grandchildren, and despite her teaching degree, she always considered herself as primarily a homemaker. For many years she taught the two- and three-year-old Sunday School Class at Springfield Christian Church in Springfield, Va.
Mrs. Osius is survived by her husband; two daughters, Ms. Mary Beth German of Raleigh, N.C. and Mrs. Laura Lee Michel and husband Jeffrey Michel of Burlington; three grandchildren, Katie Rose German and fiancé Josh Bacon of Arvada, Colo., Brittany German of Philadelphia, Pa., and Christopher Michel of Burlington; and three nieces and nephews in Oklahoma and Texas.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John Gorman, of Edmond, Okla.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the entire nursing staff of Windsor Terrace at The Village at Brookwood for their loving care.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Front Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marshall Old presiding. The family will receive friends at church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Residents Assistance Fund at The Village at Brookwood, 1860 Brookwood Ave., Burlington, NC, 27215 or the Music Fund of Front Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2597, Burlington, NC 27216.
