HAW RIVER - Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Sykes Jones, 99, went to be with her heavenly father and into the arms of Jesus Christ on Sunday June 29, 2014. She died at the Hospice Home of Alamance. She had been a resident of the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields in Mebane for the past nine years. She was born on November 29, 1914 in Haw River, NC to Ada Lelia Cates and John Benjamin Sykes Sr., both deceased. She was married to the late Winfred Lee Jones, Sr. (Wink) for 50 years and resided in Haw River.
After the death of her mother, she was raised by her father and two aunts, Caroline and Nancy Sykes. Sarah was a loving person to her entire family, especially her seven children. She was kind and generous to all, always having a kind and encouraging word. After raising her family, Sarah worked at the Haw River Remnant Shop and was a caregiver for the elderly and sick.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Christine Hughes of Norfolk, Va. and four brothers, Henry Hallowell Sykes of Richmond VA.; John B. Sykes, Jr. of Haw River; Thomas Paige Sykes of Haw River; and James A. Sykes of Louisville, KY.
Survivors include four daughters and three sons, Iris Graham (Vern) of Tehachapi, CA., Lelia Tranbarger of Haw River, Diane Baxter of Southport, and Jan Miles (Robert) of Alamance, Winfred Lee Jones, Jr. (Anne) of Columbus, GA., Benjamin Robert Jones (Linda) of Elon and Samuel Paige Jones (Gloria) of Charlotte. Other survivors include twelve grandchildren, Lance Graham (Elaine) of Long Beach, CA.; Dennis Graham (Brenda) of Stillwater, NY.; Elizabeth L. Gallimore (Danny) of Mebane; Gary K. Tranbarger (Dawn) of Gibsonville; Winfred Lee Jones III of Atlanta, GA.; Suzanne Hughston (Jack) of Columbus, GA.; Elizabeth B. Ballantine (Rob) of Southport; Jennifer B. Bishop (Brent) of Winnabow; Traci L. Jones of Graham; Matthew Jones (Renee) of Huntersville; Jonathan Jones (Lori) of Weddington; and Sara M. Thynne (Will) of Burlington. There are twenty five surviving great grandchildren, Ashley, Trisha and Justin Graham; Janey, Lonnie and Lauren Graham; Sarah, Jack and Lee Hughston; Skyler, Baxter, Lyla, Spencer, Bennett and Gibson Ballantine; Janey and David Bishop; Logan Jones; Emma, Lily and Noah Jones; Christopher, Megan and Nicholas Tranbarger; Chase Isley. There are four great great grandchildren, Erin and Justin Wheat; Micah Cowan; and Keidan Tranbarger and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and relatives at McClure Funeral Service in Graham from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Wednesday July 2, followed by a celebration of her life at 2:30 PM in the chapel, conducted by the Reverend Walter Jones.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields in Mebane, NC, the Hospice Home of Alamance for their care and support, and to all who visited and prayed for her during her illness.
