BURLINGTON - Mrs. Norma Lee Cheek Stearns, 87, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, Mrs. Stearns was wife of the late Carroll Adam Stearns Jr. and daughter of the late Julius Arthur and Irene Layton Cheek. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church.
Norma loved the game of golf and won many tournaments over her 50-year golfing career. In November of 2004, Norma was stricken with Transverse Myelitis and was confined to a wheel chair for the past 9 and-a-half years. She accepted her fate, never complaining about her circumstances or slowing down.
Surviving are three sons, Carroll A. Stearns III and wife Janet, Dale Stearns and wife Ann and Stephen Stearns and wife Nita, all of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Suzie Stearns of Burlington; 10 grandchildren, Kymberly Kampen and husband Bill, Lisa Mickens, Cary Stearns, Madison Cheek and husband Tanner, Dale Stearns Jr. and wife Kelly, Rachel Stearns, Stephen Stearns Jr. and wife Emily, Ashley Stearns, Suzanne Horton and husband Aaron and Stacey Thompson and husband Tommy; and nine great-grandchildren.
Norma was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Beachum Stearns; and grandson, Joseph Porter. The last two years, she enjoyed daily visits to Pine Hill Cemetery where her mother; father; sister, Peggy; husband, Carroll; and youngest son, Jeffrey, are buried.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Front Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marshall R. Old officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington from 6 until 8 Wednesday evening.
The family would like to thank Carolyn Coble, Nikki Miller, Candace Lancaster, Jackie Vanhook and Lisa Garner for their loving care of Mrs. Stearns.
