Days before his 90th birthday Paul Harold Ridge died on March 11, 2013 at Village at Brookwood. He was born on March 17, 1923 to Paul Fred and Minnie (Westmoreland) Ridge of Gibsonville. A lifelong resident of Alamance County, Mr. Ridge practiced law in Graham for over 56 years.
Mr. Ridge graduated from Gibsonville High School in the class of 1940. He went on to earn an A.B. degree from Elon College ('46) and the J.D. degree from University of North Carolina School of Law at Chapel Hill ('49). During World War II
he was on active duty for three years with the United States Naval Reserve conducting anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the South China Sea on an escort vessel. He was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant (j.g.).
Mr. Ridge began his career as an attorney the day after he was admitted to the Bar in North Carolina (1949) and worked proudly at his profession throughout his career. Among his many professional achievements was his admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States for which he was sponsored by Rep. Horace Kornegay. He was an active and contributing citizen throughout his life holding memberships with numerous boards, committees and civic organizations including: The Gibsonville and Graham Rotary club
s, The Graham Jaycees, Member and Past President of the Burlington Chapter of American Business Club, The Alamance County Bar Association, N.C. Bar Association, American Bar Association, Charter member of N.C. Defense Lawyers Association, charter member of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel.
He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where he served as a teacher, deacon, elder and trustee.
Mr. Ridge was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Annabel Brown Ridge originally of Charlotte. He is survived by their three daughters, Kathy Ridge, Carol Ridge Sugg (Gary) all of Charlotte and Sandra Ridge Dykes (Steve) of Asheville. He was the proud grandfather to three grandsons: Luke Dykes, Gary Sugg and Dave Dykes. He is also survived by his sister, Hilda Ridge Neill, her husband, Charles, their children, Charles III and Ann Neill Hager and their respective families.
A graveside service for Mr. Ridge will be held at 10 a.m. on March 16, 2013 at the Gibsonville City Cemetery (Springwood Avenue, Gibsonville) with the Rev. Kathryn Lee presiding. The family will host a reception beginning at 10:30 a.m. at The Burke Manor (303 Burke Street, Gibsonville 27249). In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 508 W. Davis St., Burlington, NC 27215.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to Jeanee Williams as well as Aurora Enoch and Lacy and Joyce Madkins for their extraordinary and compassionate care of Mr. Ridge during his final years and days.
