Philip McNeill Maness

RALEIGH - Philip McNeill Maness, 67, passed away peacefully at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC on May 15, 2014. His family and life-long friend Bob Clark were at his side. He was born in Oakland, CA on February 15, 1947 and raised in Burlington, NC.
Phil graduated from Wake Forest University in 1969 and Appalachian State University in 1974. From 1975 to 1985 he lived in Fairfield, VA and taught school and worked for Farm Bureau Insurance in Lexington, VA. In 1985 he moved to Durham, NC where he worked at Eaves Allenton Insurance Agency. In 1996 he moved to Raleigh, where he worked at Axa Equitable, as an insurance and investment advisor.
A very talented musician, Phil played the clarinet from elementary school through high school and college. He was a radio disc jockey on WBAG in Burlington, NC, campus stations at NC Wesleyan College and Wake Forest University, and in Madison, NC. He also sang bass in his church choirs and in the NC Master Chorale. His knowledge of both popular and classical music was truly outstanding and he loved to dance. He was outgoing and personable and made many friends. From his teenage years to his fifties he really enjoyed slalom water skiing. He was very active in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Paul F. Maness and Anne B. Maness of Burlington. He is survived by his wife Rachel Riggs of Raleigh, daughters Heather Maness Capps and husband Benjy Capps and grandsons Micah Capps and Noah Capps of Raleigh, and daughter Holly Elizabeth Maness and grandson Hayden Millar Griffin of Wilmington; his brother Frank Maness and wife Nona Breeland of Chapel Hill, nieces Anne and Caroline Maness; his sister Beth Maness Kelley and husband Tim and nephews Will and Ben Kelley of Burlington. Also surviving is Trudy Fraver Maness of Durham, mother of Heather Capps and Holly Maness.
A memorial service to honor Phil's life will be held at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church on Saturday May 31st at 10:00 am, with a reception afterwards at the church fellowship hall. The Reverend Jay Minnick will conduct the service. A private service for family will be held to inter his ashes at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington, NC.
