The Rev. Roscoe Wilburn "Squibb" Billings transitioned to his eternal life in Heaven on January 30, 2013.
Squibb was born to Frank and Lydia Billings in Grayson County, Va. on March 11, 1933. He was the ninth of 11 children. They left Virginia and moved to Burlington, N.C. when Squibb was five years old. He attended Hillcrest Elementary and Broad Street High School.
He served in the U.S. Army in Japan, Korea, and Germany. He was a squad leader in Korea, serving in the 45th Infantry Division.
He was a devoted Atlanta Braves fan and would rather surf fish, than eat.
Upon returning to Burlington, from Germany in 1956, Lena Kingsmore, the love of his life moved next door and they married on December 20, 1958. Out of their marriage, three children were born: Sherry Lynne (Billings) Greeson married to Jimmy of Shalotte, N.C.; Martin (Mark) Wayne Billings, who moved to his eternal address of 50 Paradise Blvd., Heaven 77777 on January 29, 1969 and Misty Dawn Billings Cutter of Snow Camp, N.C.
Besides burying both of his parents and son, he also buried five sisters and five brothers, Zelma Billings, Eunice Bradshaw (Jack), Hazel Trollinger (Bill), Iva Thacker (Jimmy), Margaret Butler (Pearl), Raymond Billings (Ann), Dale Billings (Rose), Claude Billings (Gena), Herbert Billings (Oneta) and Jerry Billings (Mary).
Squibb carried the Gospel from North Carolina, where he organized Open Bible Baptist Church in March 1980, to Hawaii, to the hills of Virginia and to Florida. The largest highlight and greatest reward of his ministry was tutoring five young men (four of them now pastoring) in Winter Haven, Fla., teaching them to take persecution without retaliation. (I Peter 4 & 16; Luke 6 & 28)
He had nieces and nephews all over the country. One special niece and nephew, Sharon and John Bohlen, visited and called him often. He also has his own personal registered nurse and barber, his granddaughter, Tiffany Ward Ray (David Ray). To follow his legacy are other grandchildren, Tonya Ward Cobb (Jacob), Chasity Ward Principe (Rocco), Ashley Royster Pernell (Michael), Devon Ice who passed away May 4, 1993, Brandon Cutter, Jason Cutter Jr., Seth Greeson, Chelsey Greeson and Brooke Smith; great-grandchildren, Ryan Welch, Cameron and McKenzie Cobb, Hannah and Chaslyn Principe, Hayden Frazier, Addyson Tyson, and baby Nolan Roscoe Blake Pernell on the way.
