STOKESDALE - Mr. Roy Lee Payne, 75, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Beacon Place at Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
Born Feb. 18, 1938, in Stokesdale, he was the son of the late William Franklin and Hessie Long Payne. Mr. Payne had two passions in life - the love of his family and helping others. His dedication to his country and community was inspiring. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force
, a Scoutmaster for the Stokesdale Boy Scout Troop and a member of the Guilford College Civitan Club, where he served as president twice. He was also a member of Stokesdale United Methodist Church. He was retired from the Guilford County School System with over 30 years of service as a teacher and Driver Education Instructor.
In his free time, he enjoyed water skiing, camping, and flying small aircraft. He was especially proud of having built his log cabin home.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannie Garrett Payne; three stepchildren, Ron Garrett and wife Audrey of Boca Raton, Fla., Stephen Garrett and wife Cheryl of Liberty and Mischa Garrett Luther and husband Mark of Asheboro;; six step-grandchildren Matt and Monica Garrett, Ashley and Jonathan Garrett and Victoria and Caroline Luther; and two brothers, William Franklin Payne Jr. of Kernersville and Joseph Larry Payne of Stokesdale.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Payne of Stokesdale; and a sister, Frances Payne Winfrey of Summerfield.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at his residence.
Mr. Payne's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21 in the Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel with the Rev. Carl Brown and the Rev. Tony Dowdy officiating. Interment will follow in the Smithwood United Church of Christ Cemetery in Liberty, N.C.
Special heartfelt thanks go out to the staff at Beacon Place for the excellent care and compassion shown to Mr. Payne during his stay there.
