GRAHAM - Mrs. Ruth Scroggs Spicer, 101, of 403 Ashburn Street, died at the Hospice Home on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at 3 a.m.
A native of Wilkes County, she was the wife of the late Alton Bryan Spicer and the daughter of Robert K. Scroggs and Fannie Cooper Scroggs Ray, both deceased. She was a retired department manager for Belks.
Ruth was a long-time member of Davis Street United Methodist Church and served in many capacities such as Delegate to the N.C. Conference and N.C. Conference United Methodist Women; Board of Trustees; Staff Parish Relations Committee; and a Past President of the United Methodist Women.
Her community service included receiving the 2004 "2 Those Who Care" Award sponsored by WFMY-TV, honoring her many hours of volunteering at the Burlington Woman's Club Thrift Shop, Hospice League of Alamance County, Loaves and Fishes, Good Shepherd Community Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, the Fleur-de-lis Garden Club and Home Extension Club.
Survivors include four daughters, Glenda S. Fuller of Graham, Frances Spicer Hovdesven of Burlington, Betty S. Howle and husband Bill of Kingsport, Tenn. and Martha S. Hess and husband Vernon of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Doug Fuller (Kelly), Dana Fuller, David Hovdesven, Lisa Kaczor (John), Michelle Baltierras (Steve), Will Howle (Sally Wise) and Ken Howle (Suzanne); 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by four brothers.
The funeral service will be conducted at Davis Street United Methodist Church on Monday, February 24, 2014, at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Ellen McCubbin with the family receiving friends in the church parlor from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. At other times they will be at the residence.
