MORGANTON, N.C. - Charles Norman Kahler, 79, of Morganton, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at his home while surrounded by his family.

Born in Milam County, Texas on Dec. 22, 1933, he was the son of the late Ernest Kahler and Sedonia Schiller Kahler. Charles was a member of First United Methodist Church in Morganton. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros and the University of Texas Longhorns. Charles was a member of the Longhorn Marching Band and received his Bachelor's Degree in biology from the university in just three years. He left Texas, but Texas never left him.
Charles is survived by his wife, Ruth Secrest Kahler, of the home; children, Dr. Jonathan E.C. Kahler of Mesa, Ariz. and Jeanne Kahler Schlichting of Morganton; grandson, William Charles Schlichting of Morganton; son-in-law, Brian Schlichting of Durham, N.C.; and a number of nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest Kahler Jr., Dr. Clayton Kahler and Harlan James Kahler.
The funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. John Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Graveside services will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron, Texas at a later date.
