BURLINGTON - Silas Bethel Terrell Jr., 86, of 414 Overman Drive, Burlington died at the Hospice and Palliative Care Home in Burlington on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 10:05 PM.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Fay Thomas Terrell, who survives, and the son of Silas B. Terrell, Sr. and Nellie Retha Sykes Terrell Lewis, both deceased. He graduated from Williamson Engineering School in Cincinnati, OH in 1957 and later graduated from IBR Hydronic School in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was a retired manufacturing representative for the Heating & Air Conditioning Industry. Silas was a veteran of World War II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He served at the Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, MD, Naval Training Station in Newport, RI, and the Personnel Separation Center in Shelton, VA. He commissioned the USS Los Angeles.
He was awarded many offices throughout his years including, President of North Carolina Heating and Air Conditioning Association, State Secretary of National Warm Air Heating and Air Conditioning, President of Burlington, NC Exchange Club, served as both President and Vice President of the Alamance County Comfort Bureau, and was appointed to the Board of Directors of Welcome Finance Company, Inc. Silas was recognized as Exchangite of the Year in 1963 and 1972. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Burlington, NC Lodge 649 since 1951, a member of BPOE Burlington for 26 years. He attended St. John's United Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by two daughters, Joni Terrell Tillotson and fiancé Jay Jones and Amy Terrell Glasgow and husband Mickey Glasgow; four grandchildren, Britney Glasgow, Graham Glasgow, Blake Tillotson and wife Amanda, and Joshua Tillotson and fiancée Mallory Booker; two great grandchildren, Londen Glasgow and Brantley Tillotson; two step daughters, Kamie Morrison and Dawn Borne; and a step great grandchild, Ivey Rose Morrison.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tyra Lynette Terrell; a son, Jeffery Drake Terrell; and his children's mother, Doris Gilmore Terrell Hedrick.
Silas blessed all who knew and loved him with joy, laughter, and the kindness of heart.
A celebration of life will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service at Rich & Thompson on Tuesday from 12:30 until 1:45 PM.
