BURLINGTON - Margaret Ann Winner Love died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 5, 2013, after several years of declining health. She was happily married and a devoted wife to Walker Eve "Dub" Love Jr. for 68 years, both of whom resided at the Village at Brookwood until Dub's death in March of this year.
Ann was born in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 28, 1926, to Frederick D. Winner and Margaret H. Winner, both deceased. Ann grew up in Portsmouth and Franklin, Va., and Charlotte, before moving to Burlington in 1941 for her high school years. She attended Burlington High School where she and Dub met. Ann was Miss Burlington in 1944, the year of her graduation. Ann and Dub were married in Newport, R.I., on Feb. 26, 1945, prior to Dub boarding his naval assignment aboard the USS Lake Champlain.
Returning to Burlington, Ann was active in the community, including the Burlington Women's Club and volunteer service with the American Red Cross, while also raising a family. She served for many years as head of the Pink Lady and Candy Striper volunteer organizations at Memorial Hospital in Burlington. Ann and Dub were charter members of Goose and Gander Dance Club, and enjoyed "cutting the rug" to music of the Big Bands. She was a co-founder of Margaret's, of Burlington. Ann was well known for her taste and skill in interior décor, and she often played hostess to guests from near and far. Ann knew how to keep a home and a garden. She and her family worshipped at Front Street Methodist Church, where Ann served on many different committees through the decades. Dub and Ann loved to travel abroad, usually with good friends such as Mr. and Mrs. William Goldston, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Stoneburner, Dr. and Mrs. James Baird, Mr. and Mrs. William Leath, or Mr. and Mrs. James Maynard. Ann and Dub visited every continent, except Antarctica, and always with a fair amount of adventure! Their very favorite trip was a magnificent one to Kenya in 1992.
A wonderful, caring nurturing mother and wife, Ann was long on patience, love and understanding. She was resourceful, often working to turn old pieces of "junk" into future family "treasures." Though she couldn't swim, Ann taught all three of her children to swim well. Just as Dub cared for Ann during the last three years of their marriage, Ann was caring, compassionate and a dedicated provider to her wonderful husband and children.
Survivors include son, Mr. W. E. "Rusty" Love III and wife Margie, of Wilmington; daughter, Ms. Kathryn Love Kulp, of Little River, S.C.; son, Mr. John H. Love and wife Kim, of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Tony Love and wife Cynthia, of Raleigh, Melanie Love, of Wilmington, Andrew Love and wife Madalyne, of Wilmington, Ann Love Johnson and husband Taylor, of Burlington, Maggie Love, of Greensboro, Lance Wilson and McKenzie Love, both of Burlington; four great-grandchildren, Michael, Mia, Sollena and Baxter. Ann had three brothers and one sister, Fred, Maurice, Joe and Alice, all deceased.
The family is eternally grateful for the care provided by Phyllis Davis, Mary Pettiford, Kathy Woodward, Angela Clark, Andrea Pettiford, Toni Fogleman and the staffs of Village at Brookwood and Hospice & Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell.
