Pastor Charles Donald "Don" Lyerly went to be with the Lord on Jan. 13, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 13, 1929, in Salisbury, N.C. in the Rowan County Jail to the late Deputy Sheriff Virgil S. Lyerly and Juanita Hall Lyerly.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rebecca "Becky" Lyerly; three daughters, Beth Steedley (Gerry), Donna Jones (Steve ) and Debbie Park (Keith); nine grandchildren, Caleb (Karla) Steedley, Erin (Travis) Brown, and Josh (Jennifer) Steedley, Kristen (Danny) Clark, Ben, Sara Beth and Nathan Jones, Cameron and Jesse Park; 11 great-grandchildren, Noah, Grayson, and Sophie Steedley, Landon, Eli, and Ava May Brown, and Aiden, Isabelle, Sawyer, and Finley Steedley, and Jones Clark; a sister, Nancy Pruitt and a brother, Dr. Alan Lyerly. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jake Lyerly.
Pastor Lyerly graduated from Rockwell High School, Catawba College, and Lancaster Theological Seminary. In September of 1955, he accepted Jesus as his Savior and spent the rest of his life preaching the Gospel and leading others to find the saving knowledge of Christ. His ministry included churches at Faith Missionary Alliance Church (the founder), Rockwell Christian Church, now Bethel Baptist Church, (the founder of the church and Rockwell Christian School), Brightwood Christian Church, and Grace Bible Church.
He also helped to start churches, Grace Alliance Church (Lexington, N.C.) and Welcome Christian Missionary Church, now Lighthouse Baptist Church (Welcome, N.C.). He continued his ministry abroad in Guatemala, Honduras, Bolivia, India, Venezuela, Argentina, and the Dominican Republic. He was the inspiration for and a member of Dayspring Community Church (China Grove, N.C.).
A special thanks to Hospice and Palliative Care of Salisbury and all the nurses and CNAs who offered relentless and compassionate care. A special thanks to Jimmie Porter who was a gift to our family throughout these last few years whose care went above and beyond the call of duty.
There will be a public graveside service at Dayspring Community Church at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 17. Following the burial, there will be the visitation from 3 to 4:30 and the memorial service at 4:30 at Faith Church (1078 Gumtree Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27107).
