BURLINGTON - Dr. Louise Hussey Farrior died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at Twin Lakes Health Center, Burlington, N.C.
She was born Oct. 8, 1916 in Warsaw, N.C., the second daughter of Henry and Louise Farrior.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Julia Farrior Shaw of Knoxville, Tenn.
She is survived by her niece, Ann Shaw Logan of Franklin, Tenn.; and Ed Davies Shaw of Knoxville, Tenn.
Dr. Farrior graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) and taught first grade in eastern North Carolina before entering the General Assembly Training School in Richmond, Va., where she earned a Master's Degree in English Bible. She was editor of Day by Day for the Board of Christian Education in Richmond. She next served as Director of the Editorial Department of the Board of Women's Work in Atlanta, Ga.
When the Presbyterian denomination opened the ministry to women in the mid 1960's, Farrior earned a Master of Divinity Degree at Louisville Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky. In the summer of 1967, Farrior became the fourth woman to be ordained as Minister of Word and Sacrament in the former Presbyterian Church, U.S. (Southern). She served as a professor of Bible studies at Peace College in Raleigh for four years. Later, she earned both Master of Theology and Doctor of Divinity degrees at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va.
She served on the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Nairobi, Kenya and in Korea. She visited Presbyterian Missions in Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, Zaire, Ghana and Brazil. She served as Associate Pastor of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas from 1979 until 1984 when she retired. She moved to Knoxville, Tenn. to be near her sister's family and proceeded to serve seven interim pastorates in Texas, Tennessee and North Carolina.
In 1992 Dr. Farrior moved to Burlington, N.C. She served as parish associate at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington from 1997 until 2001. Dr. Farrior received the Distinguished Alumni Awards from East Carolina University and Louisville Theological Seminary. Louise Farrior was an avid tennis player and world traveler and embraced life and everyone she met.
