The program has educated leaders in Environmental Engineering for the past 48 years.
Dr. Hanes recognized the need for an organization to represent the new field of Environmental Engineering and became a founding member of the Association of Environmental Engineering Professors (AEEP). Later this association became the Association of Environmental Engineering Science Professors (AEESP). He was dedicated to this group and served it in many capacities through the years, including Committee on Research, Chairman of the Education Training Committee, Chairman of the Committee on Legislative Analysis and Training Support, Board of Directors, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President and President.
Dr. Hanes valued educational development. He served as the Chairman of the Education Committee for the American Association of Environmental Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. Dr. Hanes retired from Tufts University in 1992 and relocated to North Carolina to pursue the antique business, Dad's Follies, which he founded with Lorry.
